I've got a (spare) copy of Gradius III that's broken very similarly to that... Although, a little worse on the back. *digs through Flickr feed for old picture*
According to the former owners (brothers), one of them was playing the game and the other one was running through the house chasing the dog and tripped over it. It's basically flush with the cartridge port when you put it in the SNES (model 1, anyway). I'd expect something similar happened to your Sunset Riders.
Anyway: pickups!
Picked up Shin Megami Tensei IV in its Limited Edition box set that includes a little strategy/art book and soundtrack, as well as Fire Emblem Awakening. ... Not playing either of them right away, but I wanted to make use of Nintendo's $30 eShop credit promotion... With which I've grabbed a Virtual Console copy of Shantae (because I don't expect to ever get a cartridge of it), and have a couple more games already in mind for the rest of it (Megaman V Gameboy, Summer Carnival '92 Recca, etc)
I also grabbed the first volume of World War Blue, a manga that reinterprets the 90's console wars as... actual wars in a medieval/samurai fantasy setting. Game companies are countries on the continent of Consume, with the main two at war being the Kingdom of Segua and the Ninteldo Empire (other countries are either allied with one of these countries or neutral). The warriors, meanwhile, are personifications of different games/game characters. On the cover there are Gear (Sonic), Opal (Opa-Opa from Fantasy Zone), Tejirov (Tetris), and Emperor Marcus (Mario). Most interestingly, the thing's written with Seg(u)a as the protagonists even though, let's be honest, they lost in the end.

Bought this on Ebay. It was never released in the U.S., and I'm a big fan of the series. Plus, the PAL cartridge is the same size as a Genesis cartridge, so it fits right in my Genesis, whereas with a Japanese version I'd have to use a Game Genie. Also, the artwork on the PAL version is similar to many U.S. games so it fits right in on my shelf.

I like how the not-released-in-America game has a big US flag in the title art. ;D
