Just an observation on the crispness and clarity of the vertical vs horizontal. IS there a way for the retail to look as good?

Smaller images are easier to retouch while big images depend more on the source: HQ scans.

The biggest advantage in my opinion is the standardized spine.

The artwork is hardly any different in size from vertical to horizontal, just different orientation.

@KingJohn3
The covers being uniform and templated helps it to look clean and crisp.  Many times the vertical artwork used is a different source than what was used in the retail cover on the site. I also think in general people spend more time revamping the artwork for vertical covers than they do horizontal.
