Okay, this question just kind of popped in my head out of nowhere. Well, not really nowhere, but out of the whole "PS4/X1 aren't backward compatible so I'm not buying it" crowd. I was thinking about how great it must of been in the past when people didn't care about this and looked forward to new systems to actually be NEW systems and not worrying about having to keep their old system (is this really such a problem?). I was going to comment on how I still have my Colecovision with the 2600 Expansion Module, and when I bought my NES (well, "got" my NES, I guess, I was only 4/5), I didn't care that it didn't play old games. And then I got to thinking about the fact that Coleco could make the 2600 module because the 2600 could be produced by off the shelf parts.
But, enough of that, the main question: Would it be possible to build a 2600 clone in, say, a NES type shell, with a cartridge slot for 2600 games, and have it play through the NES? It'd not be very compatible with the ZIF models, but the top-loader... I tried to look this up, and found plenty of stuff on 2600 controllers on NES, but nothing about the games themselves. I don't see why it wouldn't work, in theory, as the NES itself would only be needed to send the audio/video to the TV and the controller input to the cartridge, as the cartridge would hold the necessary 2600 parts. But I'm not a tech person, so I don't really know if this is possible. If it is, it'd be quite handy for another project I've been thinking of...
So, can/could this be done? Has it already been done? Or am I just really stupid and overlooking some critical piece? I don't have or want any 2600 games, but for some reason I really want to see this... so may I am just really stupid?
