The Game Gears are notorious for suffering from bad capacitors from bad batches from the early 90's. This bad investment led the capacitors "caps" to with short lifespans after a period of time to possibly bust open and spewing its acids over the motherboard as well as causing problems such as dim screens and low or no sound. (Thats the jist of it.)

"Recapping" is basically replacing the capacitors with higher quality ones that are available to us now. Giving our beloved handheld more time to live on  .

Yea really ugly stuff. The GG isn't the only to suffer from this a ton of old consoles do. I had to replace the caps on my NES. It was really ugly messing up the video/sound. I have pics I'll show when I get home.
