I gotta get outta here before I make a rash decision to blow several hundred dollars on a mess o' shmups.

Wouldn't take very long either depending on what you grab! ;)

I can recommend to any shmup fan to try two games.

Radiant Silvergun - maybe one of the most sophisticated shmups out there - pricey though

Rendering Ranger - also a one of a kind game

aaaannnnnnnddddd

Blazing Star - maybe the best looking and most playable R-Type clone out in existence

None of these come cheap though.
2 + 3 = 23

Your collection is missing 8-bit and 16-bit shmups. :'(

The best shmup's can be found on Genesis, SNES, TURBOGRAFX/PC ENGINE, NES. You only have one Thunder Force game... Bad shooter fan... Bad!!!

I got lazy.  SNES has great shmups.  Also I beg to differ.  Sega Saturn (in Japan) is the Shmup console!!  Thats why I dont own a US Saturn ony a JP one.

Super Nintendo has R-Type 3, Thunder Spirits (re-tooled Thunder Force III), Gradius III, Axelay, Space Megaforce (Super Aleste), U.N. Squadron, Aero Fighters, and it's share of Raiden, Darius, Parodius games. I'm sure there's many more I haven't mentioned.

Since this is called 'shmup chat' and the word chat sounds so open and inviting, I will ask:  What would you recommend to the total shmup n00b?  System probably won't matter, but let's keep it affordable.

For 360 in US Deathsmiles, Akia Katana are great cave ones. Also A must buy is Raiden collection 3 amazinf games for super cheap.  Raiden 4 is also out on the 360 but not nearly as good.  As for Otomudias DO NOT BUY  It is complete trash, just buy Gradius 5 instead it is hailed as the best in the series.  On XBLA you have Guange, Radiant Silvergun, Raystorm, Ikaruga, Strania, triggerheart Excelica.  All game I listed are less than 20$ now I believe.

Oh I almost forgot Deathsmiles 2 is on Xbox Games on Demand for 30.  It is a port of the JP version.  Nothing is changed or translated.

Wow,  I can't believe I missed this topic.  I'll see if I can get some pics of my Shoot'em Ups and revive this thing.  Because I have been on a binge lately.
