So while I was viewing the Pick-Up thread I noticed a lot of shmup purchases.  I figured a chat thread about them would be great.  All tips, tricks, and questions.

I want to start off by saying I FUCKING LOVE SHMUPS!!!  In my opinion they are the best genre of any game.  While side scrollers ( r-type, Gradius) take more skill than verticles ( Mars Matrix, Gundird) Both are great.  Then you got bullet hells (anything by cave the gods of bullet hell and all shmups)

Here is my collection shmups.  (No duel sticks and on rails are not traditional shmups.  But they are good)

Since this is called 'shmup chat' and the word chat sounds so open and inviting, I will ask:  What would you recommend to the total shmup n00b?  System probably won't matter, but let's keep it affordable.

I'll be honest, I like playing shmups but I'm terrible at them. I require a code for infinite or near infinite lives to! enjoy them.
My DS Cover Requests: Anno 1701, A Witch's Tale, A Witch's Wish, Black Sigil, Dynasty Warriors, Flower Sun and Rain, Mage Knight Destiny's Soldier, n+, Time Ace

I also suck at shmups so I thought I hated them until I got a Saturn and a 4 in 1 card to play Japanese games and kept seeing all these shooters listed as must haves. I absolutely love them and have bought a lot lately. Today I got Einhander on PS1 and can't wait to start playing that bad boy. I saw Castle Shikigami at the same store but did not know it was a shmup so I passed, looks like I will be going back tomorrow.

If you're looking for cheap, Look back about a week ago on the pickups thread where I posted the three 360 games I got from Amazon (Otomedius Excellent, Akai Katana and Death Smiles). I think it was around $40 total for all three. shmups.com is a great site to point you in the right direction also.

For some that won't cost you a fortune, and are truly timeless: (and accessible to someone new to the genre - ie you won't die every 3 seconds like a bullet hell game)

Sega Genesis - thunder force series
Snes - axelay, super r-type,
Ps1 - r-types
Sega master system - astro warrior
Xbox 360 - radiant silvergun (only because it's bloody expensive to get the saturn version)
Amiga - hybris, battle squadron, swiv

In honesty I could go on and on, but those are some of my favourites.

Don't you guys forget doujin shmups. Some of those can be very fun. There are of course those that made it onto Steam, but that's only a fraction of what is good. Some of my favorites include:

Valhellio - Great vertical shmup/visual novel with character designs by Tony Taka and pretty decent voice acting.

RefRain -Prism Memories- - Very atmospheric vertical shmup.

Crimzon Clover - A freakin' fun as hell bullet hell with an interesting unlock system.

The only problem is availability of those titles, cause not that many Japanese stores that sell doujin games ship outside Japan. The only option is to hope that some pop up on ebay. So here are some freeware alternatives:
  • Genetos - A game that takes you through the evolution of vertical shmups (from Space Invaders to modern bullet hell games).
  • Shmups by x.x - A collection of very good vertical shmups.

Of course, all those games are for Windows.

r-type 1 or gradius 3

neither have too many bullets or enemies on screen at once, and have excellent power-ups

I was never really a big fan of shmups when I was younger because they'd always tear my ass apart. Since I've gotten older, I've grown to like the intensity and the challenge and have actually been collecting shmups at a pretty frequent rate lately. While I'm pretty decent and I get a little better every time I play shmups, I'm by no means no comparison to what a regular shmup would be and usually play on lower levels if infinite continues are not available.

Anyway, I thought I'd share some of my favorite shmups!

Crisis Force - NES
Final Soldier - PC Engine
Soldier Blade - TG16
Eliminate Down  - Mega Drive
Gleylancer - Mega Drive
Hydorah - PC (Amazingly high quality free fan made shmup)

This so much.  King of kings.

So, this thread makes me drool.  I'm also seriously jelly.  I gotta get outta here before I make a rash decision to blow several hundred dollars on a mess o' shmups.
