Only game resellers (and players) would benefit from that.
For them it would be triple negative: Eat sales of new games, would lessen the buying of the re-releases of the old games and would directly cost them money in making the hardware BC.

I like how neither system will be "backwards compatible" yet you will be able and encouraged to buy games digitally from the ps3/360 era or older , whats the difference of my buying a digital copy or using a physical copy i allready own

The games have to be reprogramed to run on the new hardware.
That or software emulator has to be built. Which they can do, but why release it free. ;)

Why not offer a model supporting the emulator for an extra cost? I'd be more than willing to pay 100$ extra to play my own games on it.
Naaaa, they like the digital purchases better.

As would I, even $200 if the emulator would support system link (PS1), I-link link play (PS2) and Lan play (PS2 and PS3).

Sorry I know the sharing used games has already been touched on this thread but I have to share this video I saw about Xbox Ones SHARING FEE, this guy does another video 30 days later after all of us gamers "kindly" conveyed our thoughts to microsoft about this new policy. Good for a quick laugh
Video one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLmKpV0i8t4

Way to GO microsoft for turning away half your fans before you even release the console!! Keep video game consoles about playing video games (I know its a crazy idea right).
SNES for life
