Making the PS4 backwards compatible with previous versions would only increase the cost of the system. Even at $400 Sony is losing money with each unit sold.

If you're going to let the lack of backwards compatibility prevent you from playing next gen games, good luck to you.
How certain are you with that statement? PS3 and PS4 hardware are only improvements, barely any changes.

I think the architectures of PS3 and PS4 are completely different.
If I understood correctly PS3 is 7 cores Cell prosessor, where as PS4 is closer to PC hardware.

Ah, the processor makes the whole difference. Like Arseen mentioned, different micro-architecture and that's why they won't be able to. At least I know they can't now rather than they won't. I just hope they figure something out eventually for us dudes with a collection of physical games rather than buying digital copies - I mean, keeping all the consoles wouldn't be that bad if I wasn't going to be getting 10 xboxs' and 10 playstations by the time I'm 40. Just imagine all the wiring ....

Why would they come up with backwards compatibility.

Only game resellers (and players) would benefit from that.
For them it would be triple negative: Eat sales of new games, would lessen the buying of the re-releases of the old games and would directly cost them money in making the hardware BC.

Virtually EVERY piece of new gaming hardware is sold at a loss.  I believe the Wii was the very first mainstream console to be sold at profit from day one.

It would encourage more people to upgrade, as they wouldn't be competing against themselves.

I like how neither system will be "backwards compatible" yet you will be able and encouraged to buy games digitally from the ps3/360 era or older  ,  whats the difference of my buying a digital copy or using a physical copy i allready own

The games have to be reprogramed to run on the new hardware.
That or software emulator has to be built. Which they can do, but why release it free. ;)

Why not offer a model supporting the emulator for an extra cost? I'd be more than willing to pay 100$ extra to play my own games on it.

Naaaa, they like the digital purchases better.

As would I, even $200 if the emulator would support system link (PS1), I-link link play (PS2) and Lan play (PS2 and PS3).

Yeah makes much moo monee for them.

Sorry I know the sharing used games has already been touched on this thread but I have to share this video I saw about Xbox Ones  SHARING FEE,  this guy does another video 30 days later after all of us gamers "kindly" conveyed our thoughts to microsoft about this new policy. Good for a quick laugh

Video one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLmKpV0i8t4

Video two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPdcpVWlfkY

Way to GO microsoft for turning away half your fans before you even release the console!!   Keep video game consoles about playing video games (I know its a crazy idea right).

SNES for life
