Saw a very similar topic on CAG a while ago and was wondering what the people here thought about it. Basically the reasoning behind it is the PS2 has a lot of games condusive to cheapassery compared to barely any cheap gen 7 games, and especially not any good ones. I think I might go this route once I clear my backlog (that'll be the day!) because the only gen 6 console I own is a Gamecube and I imagine I missed out on a lot of neat games. Then that got me thinking about how my N64 barely saw the light of day and has a mere 10 game collection. So many damn games! :'( I seriously decided that I need to beat 3 games before I get any new ones because my backlog is getting out of hand. And I can't even imagine having the backlogs I see some CAG's have - mine's only 30 games, tops.

This is pretty much the way I do it.

I didn't buy my first Gamecube till about the time the Wii came out, and I just bought a second one for LAN play as they are getting cheaper ($29.00) I pretty much already have all the games I want for it.

This past year also saw me purchase a few Sega Dreamcast systems and begin collecting the games.

The only exception is handhelds, but the PSP was just too cool to wait for. (Once I found out I could play my PS1 games on it)

I second that handheld argument :) The last new "console" I bought on launch day was the DS. Would have bought the Wii on day one but it was sold out everywhere so I got it in January.

Up to the Dreamcast I usually wanted and got every console on launch day but then somehow I changed my mind. Now I usually wait a few months or more to see how the software support turns out, what the games are like and if there are any hardware issues that are worth wainting for to be fixed.

Got my Gamecube almost exactly one year after launch. Metroid Prime seemed just TOO good to skip.
I wasn't interested in the PS2 at all when it came out. I always thought the DC was the far better console (actually still think it is). Again I waited a year until the ygot me with Devil May Cry and Onimusha.
After the Microsoft launched the 360 and abandoned the original Xbox completely I got one for cheap.

The downside to all this is that my backlog is killing me, the good thing though is that when I want a new game I can choose from a huge selection and the games are always dirt cheap :) Right now I'm trying to ramp up my Xbox library since there are so many great games on that little baby. Plus it's great to have it modded and put all your games on the harddrive. Unplug it, take it to a friend and choose from all your games to play. Kinda like a Virtual Console with games that are wort the price :)

So yeah, a (couple of) generation(s) behind is a pretty smart way to game. I hope all those new Wii owners will discover all the great games the Gamecube had.

Gamecube never gets any love by most people. I can probably name 10 or 15 great games on it. Actually, I'll try right now. (I'm not cheating and looking up games)

Animal Crossing
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2
Super Mario Sunshine (not as good as Mario 64, but still nice. I still don't own it, I borrowed it from a friend and beat it. I'd own it, but used GC games are still expensive)
Zelda Wind Waker
TimeSplitters 2 or Future Perfect (not exclusive but GC has one of my favorite controllers)
Zelda TP (never played it :o but it got great reviews)
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Complete Resident Evil series
Chibi Robo! (another game I don't own that I absolutely love. Seriously, if you haven't played it, do so now. One of the most creative storylines I've seen and good gameplay too)

Just off the top of my head.

Looks like we all think alike. I have no GEN7 systems and just got a GC about a month ago.

The last "new" system I got was a PS2 which I bought 2 months after it was release. before that I got my JVC X'exe back in 1995 but this was when they were getting liquidated for $99.99 a piece

My Turbo Duo and 3DO I got from 2nd hand stores back in 1996 and my Saturn and Dreamcast were purchased less than a year ago.

XBOX I got before 360 was out, but I won it in a raffle... so It doesn't count.

I was thinking about buying a refurbished 360 for $229... but the only game Im interested on (GTA4) is not even out yet.

Sad thing I cry about is the fact the I threw "YES THREW INTO THE GARBAGE!!" my NES, SNES and 2600 (not at the same time)... Including all the games... (I was young and stupid)
If you have nothing to do... Don't do it here!

Yea, What's up wth that?   I want to get Twilight Princess to finish my collection, but its still like $44.99 (used)
and only $39.99 for the Wii.....

So I was not the only one to throw out a perfectly good Atari 2600.....
It was my ex-wife's idea to throw it out....   got rid of her, wish I had the 2600 back   ;D

Given that I run a gaming site in addition to TCP, I have to keep all the current consoles on hand. I do hate the cost of these systems and games.

I'll go out on a limb and dare to say that the majority of Wii owners got their Wii because of the new control scheme and new kind of gaming experience and didn't want awesome 360-esque graphics. When they played through all the games they were interested in they had to wait for the next big Wii hit or buy Gamecube games. The Wii is fully downwards compatible and, quite honestly, Gamecube games look about the same as the majority of Wii games so it won't matter to them. When lots of people want Gamecube games the demand and price rise. Something I don't like either since I got a few GC games left on my shopping list until my collection is complete :)
Why Zelda TP for GC costs more than the Wii version is above my head though :)

As an addition to Doom's improvised list I'd add the Rogue Squadron games. They are a Star Wars fan's wet dream. They're far from perfect and pretty hard (still have one level to unlock in RS3) but with added fanboy bonus they're a blast.
Kinda makes you think how Factor 5 could screw up Lair since it's practically a carbon copy of Rogue Squadron with dragons instead of Tie Fighters???
I hope they make another Rogue Squadron for Wii someday, or even a remake with Wii controls added, till the day I die, flying through the Death Star trench will never get old for me :D

The downside is that you risk missing out on some games because by the time you can get them they're Out of Print and hard to find... or, at least, it's harder to justify spending $50 on a used copy of Mario Tennis for the 'Cube...

What I've done for the Cube, Wii, GBA and DS is I buy them at launch, then slowly pick up games when I can get a good deal on them (and pick up occasional first party titles at launch if I know they'll be good).  Thanks to CAG, I can get this-gen games for last-gen prices on a fairly regular basis.

I'm in the same boat as Snowcone, except without the legit excuse. My friends all look to me for reviews, so I oblige! Plus, if something happens like when Sony stopped making the 20gb PS3, I have to have that system in my collection. I put just as much into collecting the hardware as the software. I really gotta find a way to start writing it off on my taxes though!

I'm thinking of picking up XBLA Unplugged despite me having no plans of owning a 360 in the next 5 years.

Don't do that, it's really not worth it. The only good game on it is Geometry Wars Retro Evolved. If you can't get the XBLA unplugged for less than $10 it'd be a waste of money, IMO.

yeah, they definately could have picked better games, or released newer arcade unplugged games.  it says volume one, so you would think they were planning on volume 2.  i like buying an actual disc as opposed to buying MS points, and then having to get a game that way.

i got two of my sisters both gamecubes for christmas.

my mom spent $100 on two used DDR Mario Mixes for them (not even including the pads.

she spent twice as much as i did on just one game+dance pad a piece as i did for each console
