I think it may be time to trim the fat. I have a few hundred NES games and about that many more SNES, mostly boxed. Do I keep them and try for the completist thing or just keep the ones I grew up with and played as a kid? Some of the fat that might be trimmed are higher dollar, rare games and some are unlicensed. Thoughts?

I can't even imagine completing the NES library. But if you don't like playing them, and you don't like the way they look on the shelf, then what's the point?

I personally love having tons of games, even if I don't have time to play them all.
My DS Cover Requests: Anno 1701, A Witch's Tale, A Witch's Wish, Black Sigil, Dynasty Warriors, Flower Sun and Rain, Mage Knight Destiny's Soldier, n+, Time Ace

I've never understood having something just to have it. Some people are into coin collecting and others into having rare, sealed boxes that they would never open because it would degrade the value. I cannot understand the appeal of owning something I will never use, but it's all about what brings you personal satisfaction. If it makes you happy then it doesn't matter if the whole world thinks it's a waste of time, but why have games you will never play?

Maybe wait a month or two, play a few of the games you're considering selling, and if you still feel like you don't need them after some time has passed then go through with selling off part of the collection. Just don't do anything rash you'll regret later on.

I guess you can trim sport games you do not care about, Buy you do not have to.
You do not have to go for a complete lot, or just games you played as a kid. Buy what you want, I got a list of games I want, and I pick up random cheep titles here and there.

I say post some pictures.

  • Coffee... What would I do without you?
I always thought collecting for the sake of collecting was a bit juvenile, collecting or buying games that you know that you won't like and won't play just seems like such an utter waste of money to me. Of course I don't have to understand why people choose to do it. If it makes them happy, who am I to tell them otherwise. I collect games that I grew up with or that I want to try out. If a game doesn't make the cut, that game gets its ass sold.

If they are games you know you won't play, you don't like, and (probably most importantly) you have lost the hunger for a complete collection, then sell everything that falls into the "I don't like & won't play category".

Don't sell a game if you haven't lost the hunger for a complete collection. You will hate yourself otherwise.

TLDR; You know how you feel dude. Do as you feel.

I'd definitely check out your pics / list.  Rare NES games? All about that right now. If it's a good deal you may be able to trim some fat and have them go to good owners too  ;D

theres been plenty of threads of us wanting to sell items, so long as your prices are reasonable go for it, tons of collectors here.

Also, to your original question, keep what makes you happy, Im almost have tempted to trim my collection simply due to space reasons but its hard

I would definitely be interested in some titles you can't get in PAL form or just haven't been released here in europe in the first place.

As to your question, I tend to collect games that a) have personal nostalgia value or b) I know were good but never got around buying them back in the day. I have bought a few games as a part of a bigger package deal, even made covers for them but then sold them since I never played them. My collection will never be huge since I don't want to have games just collecting dust, all the games I buy now are ones I want to play.

Last question....what are the opinions you guys have of long term collectibility for old games? I'm thinking even the .99 games on ebay MAY someday be worth a little more than that. but how long from now is the question? If a decision HAD to made right now I would say get rid of them but I keep flip flopping on it.

The bubble WILL burst. Right now retro gaming is blowing the fuck up!  A boom like that almost always means a huge bust at some point. It's not an 'if' question, but rather a 'when'.  If you're planning on selling, now or in the near future may be a good time. Prices WAY favor the seller at the moment.

As far as the crap that's worth .99, I'd just hold on to it or offer it in trades/lots. It's not like it can lose a lot of value, and selling it is more trouble than it's worth (for me anyway).

I.e. I don't think collecting VGs is a worthwhile long-term financial investment, like any other collectible such as comics, toys, sports cards, etc.  it's like playing any market; know when to get in and to get out (if financial gain is your goal).

I have a feeling that bubble will burst sooner than most think too. We are at a time right now where the current systems are towards the end of their life, sequel after sequel gets churned out and games that came out a month ago are already being sold for $40 or less. Personally I am sick of buying new games that are the same as all the rest (shooters mainly) and buy many more retro games because of it. Once the new systems come out the games will not be discounted as fast so there will be less money to go around and there will be something new so the need to buy retro for some will no longer be there. This is by no means scientific, just a gut feeling and personal experience with my spending habits.

I personally can only see it getting more expensive.

I'm of the opinion that games are undervalued right now compared to other collectibles.

Aren't some comics worth over a million? (I'm pretty sure some high amounts have been dished out)

I think prices will keep going up as long as those interested keep having higher incomes to spend on their hobby.

I think there's a guy on Nintendo Age selling a near full CIB SNES set for about $20k.

That's peanuts for some people but meanwhile a single comic can cost more than what a full set of SNES games would cost.

Think of an athlete, an executive, or someone who gets a really good bonus at their job - 20 grand would be peanuts to them.  I think as more people become successful and earn more who are interested in games we will see prices continue to rise.

I'm good either way .. I've spent some cash for some high priced stuff but I'm not planning to retire by selling the stuff either.

If prices go down there's still lots of games I want that will now be cheaper.

Personally, I only collect games I want to play. If you decide to sell any, let me know. I prefer to collect complete games. If you have any I'm looking for I'd be interested.
