Sorry, but this is all fake. Nintendo developers had gone on record saying they were unable to conceptualize how a 3D Metroid would work, or even how a 3D Metroid would control using the N64 controller. It languished in pre-development hell; the idea never even left the drawing board.
Years later, Nintendo had the same problem during the early stages of Metroid Prime. That's why they contracted Retro Studios, who had the very different first person concept that Nintendo hadn't considered. Originally, Metroid Prime would have been a third person action game that probably would have sucked.
