Just saw this cool article on MDB.  Cool new screens surfaced from the scrapped Metroid game for N64.

If only a repro of this existed... I would absolutely track one down! Such a huge Metroid fan.

I see what they did there.

Sorry, but this is all fake. Nintendo developers had gone on record saying they were unable to conceptualize how a 3D Metroid would work, or even how a 3D Metroid would control using the N64 controller. It languished in pre-development hell; the idea never even left the drawing board.

Years later, Nintendo had the same problem during the early stages of Metroid Prime. That's why they contracted Retro Studios, who had the very different first person concept that Nintendo hadn't considered. Originally, Metroid Prime would have been a third person action game that probably would have sucked.

Wow did not even see the date. Don't look at that site too often and thought it was a recent post.   :-\

Actually, Retrostudio initially started Metroid Prime as a third person action game. Miyamoto intervened and essentially made Retrostudios to change it to first person. It's well documented, so I'm not going to site my sources.

Oh yeah, it was something like that. Sorry, I was thinking from memory. Just remembered that Prime changed quite a bit during its development.
