I'm a big fan of retail covers but you guys have shown real talent in some of your custom covers. I was wondering what, if any, new ideas people might have as far as new designs and layouts. I had a few that I think are pretty nifty and I ran a few of these ideas by larryinc64 and I want you guys to give your 2 cents worth as well.
First for NES, Larry had an idea for NES to have an old school console box look and I think that would solve alot of problems as far as color accuracy and uniformity is concerned. I was thinking about the entire cover having that look with front and back being full retail art and the spine having sprite art at the bottom with the main character in a classic pose ( Mario jumping or shooting fireballs, Link holding up the tri-force after beating a level, etc ) with the red and white Nintendo logo right above that. The center of the spine has the title logo as it appears on the box and the very top has the game publisher (Nintendo, Konami, Capcom, etc). Since the old school box has alot of blue and black the colors should flow smoothly.
Now for SNES, since most all SNES boxes have a black spine and no real theme color like NES had, black seems to be the way to go. But in getting creative maybe you could have a similar top and bottom of the spine to the above mentioned NES, you know, sprite art at the bottom with either a really tiny "Super Nintendo" from left to right or a custom "SNES". Top would be publisher name and center is, of course, the title. But how about choosing a color that fits the character for the overall spine color? (Mario World would be same blue as front of the cover, Zelda would be the same gold, etc)
For N64 I like Wiggy's white covers. One question though, is it possible to make that same front and back but with an orange spine with the, I'm not sure what to call it, background art work like the retail? My N64 is the fire orange version.
You guys, please feel free to respond with your own ideas. Thanks
