A while ago I made a custom spine for retail SNES covers, I wanted to keep my covers retail, but hated how the spines did not keep a consistent template, and was not a fan of the vertical template spine. Now I am making matching spines for NES and N64 games.
The NES and N64 spines are ruff mock-ups

I'm still messing around with the NES spine, I had 3 designs,
One based on the system, One based on the front red stripe some games have, And one based on the old system box.

My favorite is the 3rd one.
I had trouble coming up with what to fill the blank space with, because the NES has no symbol like the SNES and N64, I considered a Seal of Quality, but that would put to many Nintendo logos on the spine. Maybe a controller.

A bunch of SNES covers can be found HERE I'll post a full list soon. All the covers have also been touched up from the covers available on the site. There is currently 70 covers.

I have also some plans for a SEGA striped spine set for all SEGA Systems
Master System - Green or Black
Genesis - Red
CD - Blue (DVD)
32X - Yellow
Game Gear - Purple (UGC)
Saturn - White (DVD Case)
Dreamcast - Orange (Poly Case & DVD)

I currently only have a Genesis and Dreamcast, planning on getting a Saturn and 32X.

Do you know if your could mock up one for WWF No Mercy pretty quickly, just wondering what other games would look like.

Lookin Good!  The problem I have with current NES covers is how the black logo at the top clashes with the rest of the spine. It's sort of overwhelming. How bout this for an idea? For NES covers maybe use the old school box design for the entire spine and at the top would simply be the company logo (Capcom, Konami, etc)  with a main character logo at the bottom with the red oval Nintendo with black background at the very bottom. A classic pose of Mario jumping, Link holding the tri-force, the Duck Hunt dog laughing, etc. would add a nostalgic feel as well as fill in some of the space. The character models would add a bit of color without being too tacky. Then center the original box art title with punchier colors so it can be seen a little better. The front and back could be classic retail however I do really like the black versions of the Zeldas,  Metroid and Kid Icarus. It eliminates the gold/silver problem.

This idea may also work for SNES as well. SNES is alot easier since retail is black on all except DKC. All of you guys that do covers do a fantastic job and people like me that don't know photoshop from paint really appreciate your efforts.

A familiar dilemma.  ;)

I'm looking forward to seeing your Sega Genesis design. I haven't printed any UGC covers for my loose Genesis games as of yet. But when I do start it'll be nice to have a standardized design on the spines.

My DS Cover Requests: Anno 1701, A Witch's Tale, A Witch's Wish, Black Sigil, Dynasty Warriors, Flower Sun and Rain, Mage Knight Destiny's Soldier, n+, Time Ace

The Genesis design will be the normal striped spine, with the company logo at the top horizontal. I'm still debating what to do with the black grid games, maybe just swamp out the grid for stripes, or convert it to the other format, witch is a pain, I did that with a few covers already. I'm debating making the Genesis logo smaller.
All other SEGA systems will have the stripes in different colors.
I'll do a ruff o that soon, after I'm done with Nintendo.

@JDavis, What one did you go with? I personally like the grey back, red text, and darker grey border.

@kingjohn3 I am considering putting sprite art on the Black Box NES games. Maybe some other special art on some other select games.

@HavokSense Here:

I still haven't gone with either. None of my NES games are cased up yet... At this point I'm waiting for both the Onion cases AND more space to put things (ie, my eternally delayed move)

What specific settings and what program did you use for the Zelda spine. Just wondering, because I would like to try and make some.

I used Gradient Map, it's under image settings. Photoshop CS3.
I would say wait until I get the final template done, but you can mess around with it, I still have to work out the exact shade of Green to use.

I'm going to try and get the template done within the week. The N64 one should not take to long for a basic template.
