Wiggle the AV Cables.
Make sure the Cart connectors are clean, and you have a Game Cart plugged into the system.

Check the Jumper Pak area on the Console.
It should have something stuck in there (Pictures would be nice).
Sometimes the Jumper or Expansion Paks go bad.

Also, try using AC Adapters and Jumper/Expansion Paks from known working systems, on the seemingly broken ones.

More than likely it is your jumper pak.  Try reseating it.  If the contacts in the expansion bay get dirty it will cause the unit to malfunction.  This will also be the case if you have a working unit that goes through a "reset loop" during play.

Mine is an official Nintendo expansion pack.  After my 64 sat for a couple of years, I had the exact same problem.

Even so, you should go ahead and try re-seating them.  :)

Well just for shits and grins.  Try cleaning the contacts of that pack with alcohol and a q-tip, then while its still wet seat the pack in the console several times.  Then remove and let dry.  Insert and give it a go.

Mmhm, those third party expansion paks overheat real easy.

Ah, so they cut costs by having little or no proper heatsink?

I had an N64 that was sitting in a box for a long time and I took it out recently, same problem.  It was the jumper pak.  I got a new one.  I also recently got a new expansion pak for another system.  Had to ebay it because there are no 3rd party productions of expansion paks, only jumper paks.  Does any body know why that is?  I'm concerned that at some point the one I have may go and I'll need to replace it again... don't want to pay through the nose for it if they keep getting rarer...
