To be honest, I think they've been making them for a while. Ive seen a few 3rd party Expansion Paks in the past that actually looked exactly like the official N64 Expansions Paks but without any Nintendo logos/licensing, and simply had "Expansion Pak" on the front.

I've never seen them.  Asked a guy in an independent game shop near me (he has lots of 3rd party controllers for all systems and memory cards and a 3rd party jumper pak) but he told me there wasn't any 3rd party expansion pak.  Otherwise he would order some.

That's weird.  Hopefully these will become more common.

Ive never actually seen them on a shelf in a store or anything. But a couple years ago, finding N64's at my Value Village thrift store was like a "once a week" thing. I use to pick them to resell. A few times I noticed some of them had those generic expansions packs I was talking about that looked exactly like official expansions packs minus the Nintendo logo on the front. Im assuming they were 3rd party.

Ah, so they cut costs by having little or no proper heatsink?

Just cheap, shitty components :(

They have indeed started to make third party expansion paks.

Started?  Nah, that garbage has been around since 3 months after the release of the original expansion pak.  Were shit then, are shit now.

Oh geez I didnt think they were around for that long.

The retro store in my town just stated selling them for $40 like 2 months ago, so I figured it must have been a new thing.

$40!!!!  I don't know what the owner of that place is smoking but I hope they give it out at the door when you walk in.

You can get original jumpers on eBay for next to nothing, so I don't see why anyone would buy aftermarket units ???  Unless you mean the 4MB pak, in which case I can understand the temptation to go 3rd party (though I  wouldn't EVER).

Yeah, but they have potential to cause damage down the line, and that's the concern.  If they didn't work right out of the box then nobody would buy them.

Which is why I tend to avoid ANYTHING 3rd party.

Yes. And so do I. BUT if my Nintendo expansion pak were to stop working and I wanted one NEW without paying a lot of money... I just wish there were quality ones being made now.

You don't have to pay a lot of money. I've seen plenty of 1st party expansion paks for reasonable prices even on eBay.

Official n64 Expansion Paks go for around 20 to 35 bucks, the last time I checked.
