I have been wanting a NES top loader for a while now, My NES toaster does not work very well, and I do not want a clone system.
The NES Top Loader is perfect, wit the lack of AV support in most of them is annoying and getting a mod can be a pain and I do not want to send out my system to some stranger to mod it, Then I found out that the Japanese version of the Top Loader, the AV Famicom, has AV support. I was wondering:
Is the AV Famicom not compatible with any NTSC games or Disc System games? Also what AC adapter should I use?

no famicom is compatible with US games, you'd need to buy/build a pin adaptor

japan and america share the same power voltages, so if you got an AC adaptor with it you could just plug it straight in

ive seen pictures of the disc system hooked to an AV famicom

(japan is also NTSC, so it is compatible signal wise)

I thought the av famicom system used the the same AC adapter as the super famicom system.

I don't have an AV Famicom, but I do have the original model and it's power adapter works fine here in the US.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE AN NES POWER ADAPTER!!!

Famicom power adapters convert the wall's AC to DC before it enters the system.
NES power adapters do no such thing, as it is handled inside the system itself.

Basically, you'll fry the thing.

The AV Famicom will be 100% compatible with all US games (if you use a pin adapter) except for games that use nonstandard controllers. Although it uses the same controller ports as an NES, some pins (used by the lightgun for sure, but probably other accessories as well, possibly including the fourscore) were left unconnected to the system board since such accessories in Japan use a very different port (found on the front of the original Famicom and the right side of the AV Famicom). This is very easily mended with a little bit of soldering.

The AV Famicom will also be 100% compatible with all Japanese games, including Disk System games (provided you buy a Disk System to play them on).... except for those very few games that use the microphone on the original Famicom's second controller.... Which is mostly not required to complete the games. (The FDS version of Zelda 1 and Takeshi's Challenge are the only ones I'm aware of that'll really cause trouble)

I did but it did not help much, and it is a pain to get carts in and out of the toaster. I may put getting A Top Loader for now and get some other things I got on my want list.
My local retro game shop does pin replacements for $20, not a bad price.

I'm ay end up just getting a US Top loader and moding it if the Retro store gets one in stock, they sell there for $70, I think, I wonder if Wiggy does AV mods. I still want a model 1 Famicom though, so the power plug info is useful.

Thanks everybody.

Another option is the Sharp Twin Famicom. It's a single unit combining the Famicom and FDS, and comes with AV output built in. Of course, it doesn't have the NES controller ports like the AV Famicom does, but it does have the mic in controller 2. Later models (referred to as the Twin Turbo) also have turbo functionality built into the controllers.

I have every model of NES and Famicom (except the titler :() and can tell you without a doubt the king of them is the AV Famicom.

Nevertheless, every option has its pros and cons. I wrote an editorial on all the various options out there listing theirs pros and cons. It's worth a read for ANYONE who wants to get in on 8-bit Nintendo power.
