Overscan was already off. Turning it on cut off way more of the screen.
I did some much more extensive testing today, running through every game I own for GB, GBC, GBA, Master System, Genesis, and Famicom. Out of 125 games, only 14 had issues that I wasn't able to fix by simple cleaning the cartridge, and some of those issues were minor.
Famicom had the biggest fail rate, which could still be an indicator of dirty pins, since I didn't open the Famicom carts up to clean them (it's hard to do, they're held together by internal plastic clips instead of screws)Here's the "problems" list, by status.
The following gave the error “ERROR: failed to dump ROM”Famicom - Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula (Kid Dracula)
Famicom - Crisis ForceGameboy - Gameboy Camera
Gameboy - Kirby's Tilt 'n Tumble
The Famicom ones could be dirty or the Retron may not be able to deal with some hardware in them (note they are both by Konami). The two Gameboy examples are more likely issues with the hardware in the carts, and they wouldn't be practical on the system anyway.
The following games the system could not detect, continuing to display “No cart inserted”Famicom - SalamanderFamicom - Supervision 76 in 1 (pirate multicart)
Genesis - Sonic the Hedgehog
Again, dirty pins may be at fault. I cleaned the heck out of Sonic, and confirmed that it worked on an actual Genesis, but I couldn't get the Retron to register it. The copy of Sonic 1 inside my Sonic Classics cart worked fine. I'm sure it's just my copy of Sonic 1, as Hyperkin wouldn't release the Retron 5 without it being able to play suck a flagship title.
The following games were detected, but the system could not recognize them, so they pulled up as "Unknown Game"Genesis- Quackshot Starring Donald Duck
Mega Drive - Zero Wing
Quackshot played perfectly fine.
Zero Wing only displayed a black screen. I did make sure it played on my actual Genesis.Lastly, the following 5 games ran mostly fine with the problems notedGameboy - Space Invaders
This was a special game back in the day, since it had an SNES version of Space Invaders built in that could be accessed by playing it on a Super Gameboy. This is nearly identical to the version released on cartridge for the SNES, but is missing some content (one mode and I believe a couple options). The Retron 5 boots it up like the SGB did, giving the options of playing the GB port in color ("Super Gameboy Mode") or the SNES port ("Arcade Mode"). The former works perfectly fine. The latter gives the loading message that aliens are invading your Super Nintendo and... freezes on that screen. Because their GB emulator can't run a SNES game

It's not a big loss since the SNES Space Invader cart is fairly cheap (under $5) and is more feature-inclusive.
GBA - e-Reader
Personally, I was surprised this worked at all. What doesn't work is what is kind of the whole point: You can't scan cards. BUT since it dumps the rom and the save battery, any application you've scanned in and saved to the e-Reader (one at a time IIRC) can be accessed. So scan on an actual GBA, then play on the Retron.
GBA - Wario Ware Twisted
Boots up fine, but the Retron can't access its tilt sensor. Would be kind of silly to play by tilting the Retron around anyway.
Genesis - Sonic & Knuckles
The lock-on with Sonic 2 or 3 doesn't work. Hyperkin are working to fix this issue.
Genesis - Sonic Classics
As I mentioned previously, all three games in this collection work perfectly fine. The issue is that when you use the Retron's menu to "Reset" the game, it only resets whichever of the three games you were playing (because it's a soft reset instead of a hard reset). And by default the Retron automatically makes a save state when you stop playing a game and boots that save state up when you come back to it. So you'll still be in that game. You can turn this "Auto-load last state" option off, but I don't recommend it. Instead, I recommend making a save state of your own on the menu and loading that state if you want to switch games. It's cumbersome, but workable.
