Gameboy Color and Gameboy games have a small problem with their display. Annoyingly, the whole display seems to be rendered one pixel lower than it should, cutting off the very bottom row and rendering a solid black line above the top. This might not matter for most games, but some have text that is supposed to extend all the way onto the bottom. Check out this screenshot I took on the system of Wario Land 3:

See how the letter y is cut off on the bottom? This should be fixed in a firmware update, but it's annoying for now.

UPDATE: I've informed Hyperkin of this issue, and they've got it fixed in the current development build, so the first firmware update should fix it ;D

Have you tried turning off Overscan? I saw someone mention that Overscan affects the edges of Game Boy games specifically.

Overscan was already off. Turning it on cut off way more of the screen.

I did some much more extensive testing today, running through every game I own for GB, GBC, GBA, Master System, Genesis, and Famicom. Out of 125 games, only 14 had issues that I wasn't able to fix by simple cleaning the cartridge, and some of those issues were minor.

Famicom had the biggest fail rate, which could still be an indicator of dirty pins, since I didn't open the Famicom carts up to clean them (it's hard to do, they're held together by internal plastic clips instead of screws)

Here's the "problems" list, by status.

The following gave the error “ERROR: failed to dump ROM”

Famicom - Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula (Kid Dracula)
Famicom - Crisis Force

Gameboy - Gameboy Camera
Gameboy - Kirby's Tilt 'n Tumble

The Famicom ones could be dirty or the Retron may not be able to deal with some hardware in them (note they are both by Konami).

The two Gameboy examples are more likely issues with the hardware in the carts, and they wouldn't be practical on the system anyway.

The following games the system could not detect, continuing to display “No cart inserted”

Famicom - Salamander
Famicom - Supervision 76 in 1 (pirate multicart)
Genesis - Sonic the Hedgehog

Again, dirty pins may be at fault. I cleaned the heck out of Sonic, and confirmed that it worked on an actual Genesis, but I couldn't get the Retron to register it. The copy of Sonic 1 inside my Sonic Classics cart worked fine. I'm sure it's just my copy of Sonic 1, as Hyperkin wouldn't release the Retron 5 without it being able to play suck a flagship title.

The following games were detected, but the system could not recognize them, so they pulled up as "Unknown Game"

Genesis- Quackshot Starring Donald Duck
Mega Drive - Zero Wing

Quackshot played perfectly fine.
Zero Wing only displayed a black screen. I did make sure it played on my actual Genesis.

Lastly, the following 5 games ran mostly fine with the problems noted

Gameboy - Space Invaders
This was a special game back in the day, since it had an SNES version of Space Invaders built in that could be accessed by playing it on a Super Gameboy. This is nearly identical to the version released on cartridge for the SNES, but is missing some content (one mode and I believe a couple options). The Retron 5 boots it up like the SGB did, giving the options of playing the GB port in color ("Super Gameboy Mode") or the SNES port ("Arcade Mode"). The former works perfectly fine. The latter gives the loading message that aliens are invading your Super Nintendo and... freezes on that screen. Because their GB emulator can't run a SNES game :P It's not a big loss since the SNES Space Invader cart is fairly cheap (under $5) and is more feature-inclusive.

GBA - e-Reader
Personally, I was surprised this worked at all. What doesn't work is what is kind of the whole point: You can't scan cards. BUT since it dumps the rom and the save battery, any application you've scanned in and saved to the e-Reader (one at a time IIRC) can be accessed. So scan on an actual GBA, then play on the Retron.

GBA - Wario Ware Twisted
Boots up fine, but the Retron can't access its tilt sensor. Would be kind of silly to play by tilting the Retron around anyway.

Genesis - Sonic & Knuckles
The lock-on with Sonic 2 or 3 doesn't work. Hyperkin are working to fix this issue.

Genesis - Sonic Classics
As I mentioned previously, all three games in this collection work perfectly fine. The issue is that when you use the Retron's menu to "Reset" the game, it only resets whichever of the three games you were playing (because it's a soft reset instead of a hard reset). And by default the Retron automatically makes a save state when you stop playing a game and boots that save state up when you come back to it. So you'll still be in that game. You can turn this "Auto-load last state" option off, but I don't recommend it. Instead, I recommend making a save state of your own on the menu and loading that state if you want to switch games. It's cumbersome, but workable.

Curious if you'd try something.

Use a GBA to load a title onto the e-Reader (like, a random NES game).
Go to the RetroN and dump a save file from the e-Reader.
Go *back* to the GBA and load a different title (like, a different NES game).
Go back to the RetroN and dump a second save file.

Now, can you switch back and forth between the two different save files to play the two different games?

I don't think all e-reader games can be saved onto it though. Manhole-e and some pokemon games for sure.

@JDavis - Hyperkin put out an update today that's supposed to address some of your issues including the GB screen cut off. I'm curious if your compatibility improves.

Saved onto the RetroN or the e-Reader?  Because all the card-games can be stored onto the e-Reader...

Yep! Here's the changelog, if anyone's interested.. Of the games I previously had problems with, the following now work perfectly:

Famicom - Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula (Kid Dracula)
Famicom - Crisis Force
Famicom - Salamander
Genesis- Quackshot Starring Donald Duck
Mega Drive - Zero Wing

My copy of Quackshot actually pulls up as "Quackshot Starring Donald Duck Rev 1" on the system, so presumably they just didn't have the Rev 1 version in the system's database. Impressively, the savestates and such from when it pulled up as "Unknown Game" automatically carried over now that it was recognized.

That's great! I'm really glad to see they are going to support this system as they promised.

Some of the games you mentioned - WarioWare Twisted, GB Camera, Kirby Tilt n Tumble (and no doubt Yoshi Topsy Turvy/Universal Gravitation) would be pointless on the Retron, but I'm glad you checked them anyways. I do hope they fix the Sonic & Knuckles Lock-On sometime soon.

Now if I could just find one! I've called all my local game shops - 2 don't seem to know what the RetroN5 is (those shops suck anyways), 1 has no idea at all when they will get theirs in, and 1 says they think they'll get shipped some on June 6, because the FB picture said that was the release date though they haven't heard anything confirming that, but even then they think they'll only get 4...  :-\

And there's no way I'm paying more than double for one online.

Onto the e-reader. I don't have a big collection of e-reader cards, but Manhole-e and Machop at Work do not bring up a prompt asking if you want to save it to memory (unless there is another way that I'm unaware of.) Air Hockey-e and NES games will.

Yep. It can even play some the actual Genesis can't, like F-16 Fighting Falcon. And it'll map the pause button to a non-SMS controller's Start button, so you don't have to reach up and hit the button on the Power Base Converter. ;D

Went through all my SNES and Super Famicom games today. Out of 85 games, I had trouble with 10 of them. Going to go through and clean those 10 tomorrow, which I expect will fix nearly all of them.

Cleaning fixed four of the SNES carts. Here's what's still not working 100%:

Out of this World is the weird one. The system recognizes it, but as soon as you try to play it the system kicks back out to the main menu. Its sequel (Flashback) works fine.

Contra III pulls up as "Unknown Cartridge", and trying to run it just displays a black screen.

Super Metroid pulls up as "Unknown Cartridge", and trying to run it displays the initial Nintendo logo followed by a black screen.

Megaman X 2 pulls up as "Unknown Cartridge", and trying to run it displays the initial Capcom copyright information, then the Capcom logo with the familiar jingle, then... a black screen. The first and third games ran perfectly fine.

Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow pulls up as "Unknown Cartridge", but it plays. It does no play perfectly, though, as the sprites for both Donald Duck and all the enemies are a garbled mess. The backgrounds and everything else are fine, though.

Kid Klown in Crazy Chase pulls up as "Unknown Cartridge", but it seems to play perfectly as far as I can tell.

These could still be issues with the pins (Out of this World in particular has some nasty damage to its pins), so I can't say with certainty that these games won't work across the board. Just my copies don't.

NES is the last category to test, and it'll take me quite a while to go through all of them. I've got a lot.
