I wouldn't call it a BS reason, it didn't pass quality controls. A rather good reason for delay in my opinion.

I'd rather they take as much time as they need to make this system just right rather than rush out a product with flaws,

but I'm amazed at how many times they've set and missed a release date for this thing. I'll believe it's for real out when I see it with my own eyes!

That's what they say, but I think it's an excuse for simply not being 100% ready and functional in time.  I.e. They missed their own deadline.

Supposedly they are sticking to their April release date (we'll see), and now they are dropping hints about something N64-related at E3 (portable N64 would be amazing), looking into older consoles like Atari 2600 and C64, making controllers and accessories for Oculus Rift, and they are working on a DOS console(?). It also sounds like they want the system to work with homebrew games as well as retail carts.

I've looked at some recent previews of the system since they redesigned it to allow the Power Base Converter, and for $100 or less, I'll go for it. If it ever comes out...
