| NTSC-J Conversion? |

Hey guys, I'm not sure if anyone has tried this, or has a desire to try. Lately I've been thinking, about modding my NES, making it so I can play PAL A, PAL B, and NTSC games... However, even after modding my console, I still won't be able to play Famicon games, then it got me wondering. While cleaning my NES games recently, I took a look at the size of the circuit board, and wondered whether or not NTSC-J games are any different? If not, what's to stop someone from taking the circuit board from a NTSC-J game, and putting it into our big grey slabs/cartridges? Has anyone tried it? Does the shape of the NTSC-J circuit boards make it impossible to fit into a PAL/NTSC cartridge? It could be a fun project to take on during the summer! Saying that I could just buy a Famicon... ... ... ... ... LOL! Let us know what you guys think? Regards, Drav |

If I'm not mistaken, I think the Famicom games used a different number of pins from the NES games so they may not be compatible. I'm sure someone knows more details than me though. |

Come on, this is seriously basic NES/fami knowledge. If you've looked into doing hard region mods, then how is it that you didn't know the fami and NES have different pin counts? |

Some early NES games, to save time on producing boards, were made with the Japanese board and an adapter inside the US cart shell (Gyromite is the most commonly cited example, but the adapter can be found in other black box games as well). I have seen some people take Japanese cart boards and put them in US shells with these adapters, replacing the original label with a custom one... ... But considering the carts with those adapters aren't in large supply and there's no consistent way to find them, you're really better off getting an adapter OR just getting a Famicom. Especially since even with a cart adapter, you'll be missing out on things like the Famicom's extra sound capabilities, the player 2 microphone (for all 6 or so games that used it), and most importantly the Disk System. |
