oh wiggy!, your lack of faith is astonishing! (lolz!)

this is the game genie in place, unfortunatly no shots of the process.

note the bunch of numbered wires sticking out the back, and the little switch. even without a cart in, the game genie screen comes up, this would be a problem because you cant have 2 roms in at once, the switch cuts the power to the genie, allowing me to put a famicom cart in.

this is the first half of the famicom slot wired.

and thats as far as ive got, with the soldering side anyway!

how was i going to mount the cart slot?
this is why i wanted to find the worst famicom game ever, so its shell could be used to house this and the rom could be used for testing, seeing as how i wouldnt care if id made a mistake and killed it!

this is the one i got.

from the few reviews i could bare to read on this, its very shit indeed, so nobody should care about it!

this is the same cart after many, MANY, hours of cleaning.

this is the inside.

you can just about see where ive cut out all the unnesscesary plastic to make it nice and clean

and finally, this is the hole cut to house the famicom connector.

i'll be bolting this to the underside of the nes shell.

thats as far as ive got, i can finish wiring and testing tomorrow, the final assembly may take a while longer...(happy now wiggy??)lolz

Haha, nice!  Strong work  ;)

One thing, why not use a ribbon cable?  You wouldn't have needed to fiddle with all those loose wires and label them.

1, didnt think of it, (dammit!)

2, aint got any to spare  (all my pc stuff connects via sata, and has done for the last couple of years)

would still have needed to label them, i get lost very easily

right, bored now! gonna do a bit of soldering on this, laterz!

so, yesterday i finally finished all soldering and testing, its a long story with many twists and turns...

so on friday night i finished all the soldering and decided i could'nt wait to test, so i plugged in the bokosuka board and turned her on...through the horrible jumble of pixels i could just about make out the game genie screen!, WTF? i thought id stopped it!, so i turned off and cut the ground wire going to the genie, "work now fucker!", turned back on and got the green screen of death, "maybe ive got the board in the wrong way around", so i flipped it over and tried again, still nothing, so i looked at the board and discovered my numbers didnt match up with the numbers on the board!, doh!

(will continue later, got to go to church now)

Maybe you should grab a ribbon cable or two after church. Makes it a lot harder to do that sort of thing  :P

probably got some hanging around somewhere, ive accumilated a lot of junk over the years!
(back from church/parents now, so i'll continue my tale)
...anyway, the way id wired the slot was opposite to how the cart was numbered, so for e.g. 1 on the slot corrisponded to 30 on the board!, resigned to the fact i would have to rewire, and it being 1am, i turned everything off and went to bed.

maybe it was 'cause i was determined to get it done or something, but i ended up waking at 7am, something i dont even do during the week!, after groaning i tried to get back to sleep, but after 20mins decided that wasnt going to happen, so i made myself a coffee, had a quick breakfast, grabbed my ipod, serious headphones and set to work;

these are said 'phones, trust me when i say they're awesome!

so after about an hour i had the FC slot stripped down, with all the lines labelled i set to work re-wiring the slot correctly this time, and to make sure i didnt make a mistake i kept the rom board plugged in!
with that done it was time to move onto the housing, no pics of these two parts, but heres a pic of the slot in place;

you may have noticed a second switch on the side, this connects the game genie ground pins, so with both switches OFF it will play a famicom cart correctly, with both ON it will play the genie/nes cart(s)

heres a shot with the lid on and a nes cart in;

SMB!

this was my nes test cart, getting quite good at it now!

now heres a pic of a famicom cart in;

cant remember what its called exactly, "yume penguine..." something!, anyway i think its quite cool, and not too hard first time around!

title screen;

so there you have it, my hybrid is ALMOST done, id just have to mount the FC slot to really finish it off.

just to finish off, i decided to see if the FC carts would fit in EU/UK DS cases, and yes they do!, as long as you compleatly remove the DS card slot and the GBA slot, and make both areas as flat as possible;

sweet home in place;

all my carts lined up;

thanks!, ive been doing stuff with electronics since i was a kid, built my own joystick for an old computer for example, the pinout for building a Famicom-to-NES adapter is readily available on the 'net, after that it was just trial and error...

...but i was still really happy when it finally worked!
now i just need a NES advantage...

Just plain kickass is what this is!  Good job!  Grin

Is that penquin game the one that plays sorta like Rad Racer (from that perspective)?  If so, I think I have that game on a Saturn MSX collection. Weird, but sorta fun.

Ha, Ha, thanks!

not at all, "yume penguine (monogatari, not entierly sure on this!)", is a platformer, from my screen shot you can just make out the 3 main characters, the blue penguin at the bottom is the boyfriend of the pink penguin, who is, how shall i put this?...very critical of his looks, she thinks he's too fat for her and basically orders him to loose some weight!, whilst shes deciding whether she loves him or not she goes off with the other blue penguin, the one in the top hat, we'll call him mr. big.

now unbeknowst to her mr. big has decided he doesnt want her going back to you and so sends his henchmen out to stop you!, during each level pinky gives you a target weight, and mr. bigs henchmen try to keep you above that weight, so instead of shooting or punching you they throw cakes and sweets at you!, but then how do you loose weight and therefore gain the pink penguins affections?, why slimming shakes obviously!, some of the bad guys drop timers, which increase your time limit, and others drop slimming shakes, collect enough of these and you "slim down", a level which makes you a little faster and better armed, at your fatest all you can do is a sort of belly flop, slim down a level and you get to kick the bad guys, slim down to the final level and you get a deadly shout!

the game continues in the traditional platformer manner, different themed levels and end bosses, eventually you get to rescue your girl and defeat mr. big,

anyway, probably made it sound worse than it is, it's quite fun!

The disk system just connects to the cartridge slot. As long as he mounts the cartridge slot somewhere where the ram adapter can fit, the FDS will work fine (minus the extra sound channels, as previously discussed)

didnt know it went via the cart slot, thought it was connected via an expansion slot underneath the FC!

IN THEORY adding dual cart and disk system shouldnt be too hard then, with 2 FC cart connectors and a couple of switches, you could have the disk system hooked up to one of the slots, then just 'turn off' that slot when you wanted to use a cart,
HOWEVER I HAVE NO DESIRE OR NEED FOR THE DISK SYSTEM, SO IF YOU TRY THIS AND SOMETHING FRIES, DONT COME RUNNING TO ME!
