As the title states.
What are some really popular games (past or present) that you could just NOT get into.  I'm talking about AAA titles or game with crazy hype or huge fan base.

Me? the Legend of Zelda series.  I tried OOT 3D.  I mean like 25 hours.  I beat 2 temples and it didnt hold my attention.  Minish Cap, got for free with the 3DS ambassador program.  Played 3 hours and just hated it.  Wind Waker,  nope did one temple and still nothing.  BOTH NES games.........again nope.  Twilight Princess.  I think I didn't even make it to the first dungeon and just hated it (motion controls which are just stupid IMHO didn't help.)

People think im crazy for not liking Zelda.  I don't know i think alot of people have a hype game they didn't like.

Oh also the HALO series, and Goldeneye.

And please don't say COD series.  That series sells so fucking much. Everyone says they hate it but there it is breaking records. I mean I like it to an extent and shit I still buy them all.

I'm with you 100% on Zelda.  I'm the exact same way.  I have 1 brother who is a HUGE Zelda fan.  I just can't do them.  For me I think it's more about the genre than it is the gameplay.  For example, he's a huge Lord of the Rings fan, and likes Star Wars, while I'm a huge Star Wars fan, but only sort of like LOTR.

Give me Mario, Metroid series, DK, basically any Nintendo franchise except Zelda and I'm there.  Lot's of people think I'm weird for that, but I just don't get the games.

I've played/enjoyed Halo games, but never owned them.  Love Goldeneye.

I like Zelda, but I'm not the biggest fan. OOT was alright, but not the best thing ever, I love Majora though. Haven't beaten any others so can't really comment on them but I tend to get board with Zelda 1 after the first dungeon, same with 2.

I have not gotten into much of Mega Man, namely MMX.

Also SEGA, in general. I have a Dreamcast and Genesis, and there aren't many games I want. Ecco is boring and kinda crappy, Revenge of Shinobi is boring, Golden Axe if fun, but gets boring after a while,

I like sonic, but most of the games are Meh, Excluding 2,3,Knuckles,Rush
Sonic Adventure is mostly meh, same with 2, The Sonic stages are fun, not the best, but fun. Tails stages in SA1 is Sonic, but with a annoying character and a easy way to cheat (flying). Knuckles/ Rouge stages are crap, it is Banjo Kazzoie with all the fun removes. E102/Tails SA2/ Eggman stages are fun but very easy. Amy is meh. Big is completely out of place.

Super Mario Bros. 3. I loose interest in World 2. It is just not as fun as SMB 1 or SMW. My biggest complaisant is the levels are too short, there are a lot of them, but the flow is broken with the almost pointless map screen.

To help prove my point, compare the first level of each game:
SMW
SMB1
SMB3

Hands down, Earthbound.  I have no idea what everyone loves about that game.  I had it 15 years ago, played it, played it some more, played it again...just couldn't get it.  That said, I DO wish I kept my copy.  That thing is insanely expensive these days.

But the biggest thing I never got into?  MULTIPLAYER!
I just don't get it.  I play games for the story or gameplay.  And sometimes multiplayer is a nice added bonus.  Gives it a little more versatility, maybe online co op in a campaign...but these death matches.  Damn.  I remember meeting people in line for Mass Effect 3 who had never played the series and were just buying it for the multiplayer.  And now a lot of games (like COD) design the multiplayer, then just throw in some crap campaign as an after thought.
The only reason I think I ever really play MP is for the achievement points.

The biggest one I can think of would probably be Mario Galaxy 2. I liked the first one and was expecting the sequel to be even better (or at least on par), but I guess I didn't really like how it seemed to be aimed more towards little kids or something... Also I found it a lot easier than the first one. Not sure why when everyone seems to say other wise ._.

I guess now that I think about it, I generally don't really like all the hype for Mario in general ha. I like a few of them, but there seems to be a lot of Mario platformers being released that look about the same to me :/ (and too many Mario Parties)

I thought of one more...Mario 64!

The last post got me thinking about it.  I HATED the 3D mario games.  3D Zelda?  No problem.  3D Metorid?  Awesome.  Mario just always felt like it should be in 2D.  I love a lot of the Mario games, but the 3D ones I just pass by.  64 left a bad taste in my mouth, and Galaxy didn't do much to fix it.

Just out of curiosity and own personal research, mind I ask the ages of those who responded via this forum so I can kinda get a better sense of maybe why someone may or may not like a particular game?

With anything, everyone is entitled to their own personal preferences and not. Zelda may be a favorite of mine but its simply due to it being something I grew up with as well as personal types of games I like.

To answer the original question, there are several popular games I never could get into.

- Halo/gears  , Honestly due to me not wanting to be part of the hype. I own all of them, played a few, but never was blown away by anything. Gears especially, why can't they make normal looking people, why all the super huge marines lol

-Resident evil (PS1 to Current). I love me some capcom, but resident evil just never resonated with me, maybe as I am not a fan of horror in general much less the survival  horror genre. Dead space is about the only one I truly enjoyed and disliked 2 and 3 of the series.

-Metal Gear Solid (PS1 to current). Stealth games try my patience and for someone like me who overanalyzes just about everything I always hated making such a simple task take 10x longer and listening to them yap at you over the voice com lol

GTA(PS1 to current) - Great games in what they accomplish, but I suppose at least where I live (New Orleans) it reminds me to much of the way people act around here and it drives me nuts. When I managed a gamestop I sold 10x more GTA than any other game and it bothered me that they only played it to be a menace and because it was the cool thing to do and cared little of the scale and scope of the game

@madrocsz  I am 27 and have had a gaming system in my possession since the NES.  I play mostly current gen but like I said have played many games growing up.

Also this thread proves my point.  I love the Gears series, Metal Gear, GTA, SMB 3 (best IMHO) but alot of you dont like them.  Crazy doings around these here parts!!

Call of Duty...just because it sells a lot doesn't mean it's good. Look at Twilight and Cocaine. It has it's fans but its just not for me.

Grand Theft Auto. It's just something that never grabbed my attention.

Link's Awakening. I beat it, but I had to force myself to do it.

Street Fighter. I am more of a Tekken guy.

I've always just ignored hyped up games unless the story interested me. I care even less anymore as I don't own a current home console.

All that aside, one newer game I did hate (and had great reviews) was Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (DS). Glad I got it at the pawn shop for $5. I don't even think its worth that, but at least I didn't pay retail.

(and this reminds me I should put that on my trade list. lol)

I'm 30.  Started playing NES in '87.  Went the Genesis Route in 1992. Finally got a SNES as well as a PSX in '95.  N64 in '98.  After that I got most systems when they came out.

Was always more of an action platformer guy in the 80s and early 90s.  Mid 90s switched to RPGs and Action/horror titles.  Now I'm a mixed bag of whatever I'm in the mood for.

6 series I am entirely devoted to and will probably buy whatever they put out, no matter how crappy I feel about it later:
The Legend of Zelda, Mass Effect, Resident Evil, Halo, Silent Hill and Final Fantasy...it's hard being a fan of a few of those these days

I know some games are way overhyped, but a lot of these long running series got me hooked when I was a child or in my teens.  Hell, the first NES game I ever beat was the Legend of Zelda in 1988.  Took me 3 weeks.  So no matter how hard they fall (see Final Fantasy XIV or Resident Evil Operation Racoon City) I am still a loyal fan and hopeful they will once again live up to the hype.

Every "AAA" game that gets released on 360/PS3 nowadays. Dunno if that counts, but everytime I "try" one they end up either being interactive movies, or just plain boring. (Or both!)

You guys are going to hate me with this one. Final Fantasy ... any of them. I've played a few hours here and there but i'm never personally driven to complete the game or to even continue playing. That being said i actually own half of the games in the series ..... for pretty much no reason other than for the collection.

Im right there with you Shenske. Ive never been a fan of Final Fantasy and most RPG's like it with the exception of a few like Chrono Trigger and Breath of Fire. Something I consider to be very fortunate of, because I dont have to go through the trouble of tracking them all down, which some of can be pricey. And when I do find one for a good price, its always an easy buck for me to sell it and put the funds toward something I actually want.

Ive certainly tried my hand at playing FF7 & FF8, but my motivation to continue the game would always fade by the time Id reach disc 2.

I do own a couple FF games tho, mainly the action based ones like Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core, and Mystic Quest which Ive always enjoyed. Probably because It was intended to be for beginners and it was something I could actually play growing up.

Other than that, as much as I love shooters, I could never get myself into games like Halo, Gears of War or Call of Duty which everybody seems to be playing these days. And I can lay down a decent ass kicking too when I do play, but I think the fact that everyone thinks these games are just soooo awesome is part of what makes me not give a shit. That and I dont really have any interest to play online modes that are added to champain games. Now if the game was designed purely for online play, I might be more inclined to get in on the action seeing that its actually the main part of the game. This new Defiance game on the way may change things for me. Seeing as how its going to be a console MMO and online play is what the game is designed around, Ill feel motivated to put the time into regular online play. Guess well just have to see how it turns out.

I wish they'd create some kind of console Action RPG MMO with gameplay similar to Fable or Dark Souls series. Pretty much everything online is shooters these days and we could use a change. Even a Beat Em Up MMO would be sick!

Man what's with all the Zelda/Mario bashing in the first few posts. I absolutely love both series and buy every game that comes out then usually buy them again years later after I've traded them in for whatever new system I had to have. Now for the stuff I can't get into: Mega Man never interested me and the Metroid games before the first Gcube version where just awful for me. Also, I never liked any GTA or any "sandbox" style games, tell me what I need to do next damnit, I don't want to kill anymore hookers!
