The last handheld system I bought was a DS Lite about 6 years ago(ish).  Thinking about picking up one of these new-fangled ones.  From experience, what are people's thoughts on the comparison.  Without trying either one out, I can see ups and downs to both.  But I'm trying to decide which one to go for.

I can get a black 3DS used at my local indie game store, but a friend of mine says he likes the XL better BUT that one doesn't come in black.

Which one is more worth getting?

Personally, I prefer the XL. The buttons and D-pad on the normal 3DS feel mushy and tend to squeak (and, quite frankly, it's a bit of a stretch to call the Start, Select, and Home buttons...). The XL is also better for backwards-compatibility - on both systems, the upscaling from the DS's resolution to the 3DS's resolution is rather poor and makes text blurry, but holding Start when selecting the DS game (or DSiWare) overrides that and puts the DS game in its original resolution, with black bars around the screen. On the normal 3DS, this is extremely small - smaller than the original DS's screen - while on the XL, the DS game is about the size of the DS Lite's screen. The XL also has slightly better battery life (3.5-6 hours vs. 3-5), and the 3D slider has a definite off position rather than just automatically switching off on the lowest setting.

Of course, the XL's screen does look slightly more pixelated because of the increased size, and it is rather bulky. It also costs $30 more, and doesn't have a charging cradle (though contrary to popular belief, it does come with a charging cable - at least, outside of Europe). I think the benefits outway the downsides, but really you're not going to know until you try them out.

I think those are all important points.  Here's a whole separate question: does anybody think Nintendo will update the DS again in the next 6 months?

Get the XL. Its more comfortable to hold and the screen quality seems better to me.  Its a very well built system.

I don't have a XL but a regular one, and if the XL is heavier that the 3DS I'll pass... It's so uncomfortable to play for long periods on this great device... Looking forward for a lighter XL revision before taking any buck outta my pocket.

Silver and white are options if you're up to importing an JP unit.  Dunno if that helps at all.

But the 3DS and 3DS XL is region locked, so unless you want to buy all your games in Japanese, importing is out...till they hack it.

As I have both I must say the 3DS XL is a better buy if you are looking to take advantage of the 3d elements of the console. The effect is much better on the bigger screen and overall more comfortable of a handheld.

However- if you are looking at something more pocket friendly and don't are as much for the 3d the standard 3DS is still great.

My wife bought me a 3DS XL for Christmas, and I freakin' love it! I never owned an original 3DS (I heard about several issues with the hardware, including a design layout that causes the top screen to get lines on it over time), and I only recently expressed interest in getting a 3DS XL. It is a very nicely built system, and the screen is wonderful. I've already burned through Super Mario 3D Land in 16 hours, and have put over 40 hours into Resident Evil Revelations.

Also, in case you are wondering, I went with the red model. I thought about holdig off until some more appealing colours were released, but I really like the red and don't regret it for a second!

XL. Bigger screen, more comfortable, better build quality. Way better 3D slider and because it has a bigger screen the 3D effect is more...effective and does really look quite exceptionally good.

I didnt jump on the DS XL bandwagon but am seriously tempted to get a 3DS XL, the screen is just that much of a size difference and honestly more comfortable to hold. Reg DS makes my hand cramp

Can you try out any of them?  If anything you could go to a best buy, GameStop or anywhere that still has a 3ds xl stand and see how you like the feel of it.  And maybe try to see if any of your friends have a regular 3ds and hold and feel that one (although I honestly didn't feel much a difference between a ds lite and a 3ds in terms of size and feel).

Other then that I'd probably go the xl.  I'd have gotten that one but I couldn't pass up the Zelda 3ds when it was released lol.

Also, like someone mentioned, I'm sure there'll be a new 3ds soon that has an integrated 2nd circle pad as opposed to buying the addon piece

tempted to pick an XL up, but i'm still kinda hoping that they'll incorporate a second stick. it's not all that likely, but still.

I have a XL and while I haven't really held a regular one, it certainly is a lot easier for me to hold than a lite...
Most of the other points have been said already, although I also like how the stylus is at the side in the XL, rather than at the back

Oh and also I lucked out and bought it on Boxing Day when is was $50 off at Best Buy :>
