So I've got UGCs for my NES, SNES & N64 games (well, actually only some NES in UGC - I'm waiting to see the Onion NES cases). I've got my Genesis & 32X games in Genesis and 32X cases with reprinted covers. I've got Game Boy, Color, and Advance in 3DS cases. I've even started putting PC/DOS games and PS1 games in poly cases.

The last bit of my collection has reached a crossroads - Sega CD, Sega CD 32X and Sega Saturn games - to case or not to case.

I've gotten all but 2 of the Sega CD games that interest me. All of  them are in their original tall jewel cases, except for Sonic CD and Echo the Dolphin, which are in CD case-sized pack-in cases. Also 2 of the games I have, plus 1 that I intend to get, are in the Sega CD "boxes". So I have all official cases, but they don't all match.

I currently have only a handful of Saturn games, but already half of them don't have their original case. And even if they did, when I get Japanese games, they won't match at all. Plus there are many nice matching DVD covers for these systems.

So, what do you guys think, should I put their original cases in storage and put them in DVD cases, or should I leave them as-is and track down any missing original cases? What have you guys done?

I was also thinking, if I do get DVD cases, I'd like to find some blue, orange and white cases for each system to make them more interesting.

I'll be doing all of my CD based systems in the DVD cases for uniformity. I don't like having some games in jewel cases and some in long boxes. Not to mention it's so hard to find Saturn and Sega CD games with good cases. However, I'd never thought about color coding. I like that idea.

Yeah, I haven't found a place with really good prices on colored DVD cases yet, but at least for Sega CD (blue) and Saturn (white), you could always order a bunch of replacement Wii and Wii U game cases. And generally white DVD cases are easy to find. And there's only 5-6 Sega CD 32X games total. The tricky part is finding colored cases that support more than 1 disc for those that need it. I've found white 2-disc cases just fine, but for orange and blue I may just put the 2nd discs in CD sleeves and put those in the booklet area.

I originally went for all DVD cases, but Ill be honest those big ass jewel cases look sooo good lol.

I still have a few saturn games w/ cover art in reg dvd cases but they are cheapies so I plan to replace them in the future. I also have printed out a few replacement cover arts and got rid of crappy madden games for their cases and put them in the jewel cases.

To me its a matter of preference and honestly while I can stand DVD cases its like I look for something to do and more crap to buy lol

i ended up recaseing all my sega cd games in dvd case for 2 reasons 1: they are shorter ( alot of ready made shelves dont fit the original bulky cases  and 2: dvd cases are less thick so more room on the shelf all together
i have all my original cases in a nice rubbermade bin safly tucked away

Check out January 2013 Pickups thread on page 18. madrocsz linked a site he got his from and although they don't have all the colors you are looking for, they are a pretty good price ($5.75 for 25 or $0.23 each)

Thanks. I may get blue cases from there.

For anyone interested in doing something similar to what I'm thinking of doing, here are some results of my search:

Sega CD games -- http://www.meritline.com/dvd-case-single-blue---p-20404.aspx

32X CD games -- http://www.checkoutstore.com/STANDARD-Solid-Orange-Color-Single-DVD-Cases-p/clrcasec-so.htm

Sega Saturn games -- http://genesysdtp.com/1dvddetails.htm
(they also have several multi-disc options in white)
