I voted yes just because this site is full of talented artists.  Although, due to uniformity a lot of covers will follow each specific template so there's only so much outside the box thinking that will take place.  But if asked to make a custom cover that doesn't follow the templates, I'm sure that a lot of unique and great covers will be created.

Without trying to insult anyone at all, I'd say no, not everyone is able to.

With that said, I don't think all are actively trying to. I think many folks really wanna just have a near copy of what would have come with the games they own, and that's perfectly fine.

There are some really talented folks here, and you can watch a lot of em get better with every cover. When I look at some of the really old covers I've downloaded from the site versus stuff from users like Segamer, Wolf, Larry, and many others, I'm blown away. And of course the work from the vets is always top notch. Shenske is still cranking out amazing quality work after 6 years of doing it.   Some of this stuff is hands down BETTER than the original while replicating it to the last detail.

Now if we could just get more of you guys to start using Illustrator or some other vector-based soft...

I can't comment as I can't contribute on the design portion of this site, it's something that I am sure I could eventually learn but would never master as I just don't have that artistic/innovative nature in that spectrum.

Uh oh...looks like Seymor's gone 'round the bend!  Guess that constant diet of Ramen noodles finally took its toll. ;D

I wish I had even a fraction of the artistic ability of some of the artists here, but sadly my only strength is patience and determination.  I don't have an eye for art, I'm just meticulous (for the most part) when it comes to cleaning.  It seems like you either have it, or you don't, and I reside in the middle of the 'don't' hemisphere. :p  I wish I had the ability to do what e.g. segamer does to redraw the art of a low-res cover and make it look good as new or to vector draw like larry or wiggy and TCP is very blessed to have such talented hands working for it, but myself I'm pretty much regulated to cleaning, retyping, and (when required) getting new screenshots.  At least if I can take care of those menial tasks, others with more talent don't have to waste their time doing so, and then everyone wins!

But out of curiosity, where were you going with this thread, Seymor?

Oh i definitely can make vector logos. I just usually choose to go the lazy route and not remake the logos if i don't have to. I don't reinvent the wheel if i don't need to  ;)

Dude, I know YOU can.  Trust me, for all the vectors I make, there are way more occasions where I don't.  It's a lot of work, as you know :P

Since the site has a large volume of individuals that builds covers, and we aren't watching how each and every person is doing so, how could anyone judge. I myself build covers without scans. I haven't fully disclosed how I do so but all my images are high resolution. I came up with techniques that required me to think beyond the box. In other cases, I see box art/covers that blow me away from other artists on this site. Currently, one of my projects is Super Back to the Future 2. I'm drawing everything from scratch (In vector graphics) so the art looks Super Deformed like the game. I know Wiggy has drawn many of his covers and created his own brand of templates. Many members have spent hours upon hours working on quality covers. Ultimately, I think it's an insult to question if the artists of this site think outside the box. There is no box. There is no limitation. Artists of this site create things they love and enjoy. It's a labor of love. It's beyond the box.
