I wasn't trying to be a jerk earlier, but I will put it like this.
As long as I'm not hurting anyone, leave me the hell alone. Let me own what I want. let me do what I want. Don't take something away from me what I enjoy because you may have the same thing happen to you. That would suck wouldn't it.
And truthfully, yes, the Govt. does have bigger and badder weapons, but here is the case. Say America revolts against its Govt. (or any country for that matter.) they are not going to blow up it's citizens with its badass nukes... It's going to come in with brute force and manpower.
I will explain why.
Your running a business (Your Country). It has 10 employees (Its citizens) . Well they get pissed off at you as the manager (President, Head of whatever) and start a protest. Your in your cozy little home and you are unsure who it is exactly. Are you going to fire (Pull out the big guns and blow up and shit) ALL of your employees (YOUR FINANCIAL INCOME)???... HELL NO!!
It will rattle some nerves. But People need to have means to protect themselves. What if it was you and some criminal breaks into your house with a gun, katana, or some magical powers? You would want that same defense or better to protect you and your family. I know I do.
I'm n ot going to be the one thats trying to call the cops to get to my home especially when it takes them 30 minutes to get to my house. "OOPS they are dead already. Our bad."
I would rather die trying to protect my family WITH guns, then set back and have nothing to protect myself.
Now I'm n ot telling anyone what to do, but it wasn't us that were hurt, so be sad and pray, raise donations, or whatever you want to do for them. and lets calm down because i quite frankly enjoy everyone I have met and talked to on this site, and don't want anyone pissed off at each other or me.
Let's...

To continue where I left off, the reason we have a standing military is thanks to Alexander Hamilton. I unified the militia so that the United States as a whole could conduct war without having to delegate that power to the states. The law was passed before we got into the War of 1812 and there is no reason to arguing on about it. The Feds have the power and it will never be rescinded.
As for a gun ban? No. That won't work, but I think more laws pertaining to the sale of firearms would be the right course of action. In Australia, you have to apply for a license, which takes up to 28 days before your application to apply for one comes back, then you can get your license for a type of gun (handgun, rifle, etc), and then to own a gun you are required to state your reason for purchasing a weapon (self defense is not an acceptable reason there, a gun can be used in self defense, but its sole purpose cannot be to kill other people. Hunting, Sport, Collecting are all viable), a gun safe, and trigger lock.
There are additional laws as well, but those are the more important highlights. Tough again, Australian laws are usually tougher on everything, like DUIs for instance. Do that once and you are done. Texting while driving too.
Just making sure every firearm is registered, licensed, and locked up will stop things from happening. I do also believe we need to monitor ammunition sales as well, as Aurora wouldn't have happened if we didn't allow the sale of 6000 bullets to be sold to that maniac.

I live in the Great State of No Jersey. Here there is a multistage process to purchase a handgun. First you need to obtain a firearms ID card which includes a Federal level background check, fingerprinting, and Mental health background check. Once that all clears the chief of police of your municipality has to personally sign your card. This card also has your finger print on it and allows you to transport long-arms and shotguns. It does not automatically allow you to buy anything nor does it allow you to carry, just transport from the store to home or from the range/field to home. This process can take up to 10 months to complete. Next you apply for a pistol purchase permit. This includes more background checks, I think at the Sate level, personal reference questionnaires are sent out contacts, and again the chief of police signs the permit. It is only good for 90 days and only one can be purchased per 30 day period. Then you can go to the store and pick up your firearm, but not after one last check is performed. The FFL seller calls the NICS system which is a nationwide system of instant background checks. If you have an outstanding warrant, i think owe child support, or another reason they choose you can not purchase the firearm, even if you pass all the other checks.
I mention all this because most people have no idea what it takes to buy in the very restrictive states like NY, NJ, CT, CA etc. This process is not the same across the country. I'm not an expert on the matter. Just my personal experience. There is plenty of reading on the individual state websites if you want to get more Facts.
