Decided to do all the RPGS I bought recently and haven't played yet.
Well 4 out of 6 of the boards don't give me enough room for the style battery clip I'm using.

Going to check radio shack but I don't have any hope for that.
Any suggestions on Style of clip?

Went to radio shack and they didn't have a single coin battery holder. Not surprised.

I use these

They can be added right to the board if you're crafty.  I'm writing up a little how-to and I'll toss it on my blog when it's done (it's really straightforward).

I had thought about using those originally. Just wasnt sure how i would install them.  Mine are just a bit too thick if installed on the board. Might try taking a dremel to one and see if i can get it to fit.

Would really like to get em done before xmas. One of my family members is getting me a retro duo portable :p

  • It's dangerous to go alone...
Here's a pic that I lifted off of google. I like "A" best personally, and they tend to have the best fit and look on the board - you can grab them off of eBay.  I've also seen pics of "B" and they work great as well if you don't mind the cream color. :D "C" is the one Wiggy showed you and that works great as well. Sucks that "D" is the most common and the only one that doesn't fit on the board. ::)

I'm looking for vol. 2, 4, and 5 of the Orchestral Game Music Concert CDs. I'll pay well if it's authentic and doesn't skip. :)

I really love C because a) they're dirt cheap, and b) they require ZERO desoldering ;)

Now you are just going to confuse people with your Capital C's and lowercase a's and b's!
A is dirt cheap?
B requires ZERO desoldering!
WHY DO YOU LIKE C THEN!?!?  ???                  ::)

I really love C because 1) they're dirt cheap, and 2) they require ZERO desoldering ;)

Looking on ebay, would these work?  They look similar to Wiggy's favorite, but I don't want to shell out $45 + shipping for BS-5 when I can pay $20 + shipping on something that will do the same thing.

Damn, I did sorta make a mess of that LOL!

Yup, those are what I use. You can sometimes get em on DigiKey, but they're often out of stock, which I think is most likely due to the fact that they're like half the price of any other 2032 holder.

Go get em!

note the difference in the ones I found cheaper compared to yours

Yours

Mine

Mine seems to have both sides halfway covered, yours is open on one side.  Would it still in theory work?

I totally didn't :-\ Don't have a whole lotta free time anymore, so I won't get to one any time soon either. This looks like a pretty decent writeup though ;)

Yep, that's pretty much it, except you COULD surface mount the A clips on most SNES games. I've done it without issue.
You can't surface mount on Sega carts though, and the boards are slightly thicker, making it a bit harder to solder
I only mention this because when you try to bend the contacts on the A clips they tend to fall apart.

Edit: also found some clips I'm going to be trying out on a few gameboy games.

Edit: Got a lot of cheap chinese CR2032 ($10 for 50)
No idea what their life will be but they're surprisingly more consistent in their voltage than some energizers I have.
I've been checking each one I use with a multimeter for obvious reasons. Tested some energizer for comparison.
I got 2.7v - 3.4v on various energizers. The cheepos all read between 3.0v - 3.3v (probably tested 6 of each brand)

Edit 3: I keep doing edits because I don't really Feel like bumping an old post. Maybe I should just add this all to the original post.

Anyway, Just did 20 or so battery clip installations. I have a bad habit of installing them for games I'm selling, but not my
personal collection. Did 20 in less than 2 hours while watching youtube. :p

Sorry for bringing back a dead topic, but I managed to replace the battery succesfully on my Super Mario All Stars cart.
I bought pretty expensive batteries with solding tabs on them, and made it work.

I don't ever want to do that again, so I think I'll add batteryholders for my rpgs instead.
I haven't seen the 'A' batteries in online shops here, but I think I've seen both B and C ones.

Wiggy: How do you make the C-ones fit? I'd really like a small explanation, I don't think I'll need an in-depth guide

/edit the distance between the solder points on a snes cart is 18mm right? Then some of the ones in the above picture wouldn't fit at all?

/edit 2
https://dx.com/p/battery-holder-for-cr2032-coin-cell-brown-5-pcs-156999 << those are still available and have free shipping to where I live... can anyone confirm these work?
someone in the comments says they do, but I want to make sure since it'll probably be like a month before they arrive in the mail... :)
