My friend absolutely loves the Suikoden series and is pretty upset they have not made another one. He saw in my Gameinformer that Growlanser for the PSP is similar as was another that I don't remember right now.

Is there other RPG games that reminds anyone of Suikoden? Console preference doesnt matter, he has access to all the major ones. I might even have any suggestions that get thrown out, but cant give an honest opinion on.....I will never be able to play all my games...

  • Think off-center.
The older Suikoden's or the newer ones?

I believe he said his favorite was 3. But I know he didn't get a chance to play 2 (because of its rarity) and he did play 1.
also, his favorite character from 3 was some dude named Geddo...not sure of spelling...

He is a very big Story driven person, but naturally, if something just isn't fun to play its going to loose its appeal.

I've only played 1 and 2, so I don't really know if 3 is different in some significant way.  What specifically does he like about them?  I don't recall it being vastly different from most every other JRPG of the time.

I asked what he specifically liked.....this was my reply:

An expansive story, lots of playable characters. I do not know, epicness. I do not know how to explain it.
It was just the greatest gaming experience on the PS2. I really got to know every character, I replayed Suikoden 3 several times over. And replayed 4 and 5 almost as many times.

As you progressed in the game your castle became bigger and more populated, like it was a town instead of a rundown broken castle. Characters culd team up for some wicked combo attacks and the magic system was unique in that almost every character could use the same rune if you wanted them too.

Luckily I got that one from Seymore and a 2nd from an eBay auction that included Castlevania 2 pack and GB Player for gamecube....he has the 2nd copy...I'll have to tell him to try it.

Suikoden always reminded me of FF6. There's a huge list of playable characters and they all have a great story of their own. Your party is always evolving and at the end they all come together to get the job done. Plus, it's just an awesome old-school 2D JRPG. My favorite from that generation, hands down.
