Anyone else enjoy Godzilla movies? There are now 28 films in the series (30 if you count the 1998 American one and the upcoming American reboot).

Do you like the cheesy ones or the serious ones? Dubbed or subtitled? Any all-time favorites?

For me, I actually enjoy both the cheesy ones and the serious ones as if they are 2 different things - kind of like enjoying the Adam West Batman and other Batmans. I probably also grew up liking them because I already enjoyed the giant monster fights in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

My favorite cheesy one might have to be either Invasion of the Astro Monster or Destroy All Monsters. They're delightfully dated and they were right when Godzilla was kind of in between being good and bad. Plus it's fun to see monster rumbles!

My favorite (mostly) serious ones would be Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (and most of the Heisei series), and Godzilla, Mothra & King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. I usually will watch them dubbed for the funny dubbing that was done, especially with old people and children.

My favorite Godzilla design is probably also the one in GMK. Those blank white eyes were creepy, and the blast effect looked pretty good in that movie. Favorite enemy monster is probably either Ghidorah (90's) or MechaGodzilla (70's).

Yes, i like Godzilla. I have just about all the movies but i think i'm missing a couple. I'd love to have that Toho Boxed set but it costs waaay too much. I like the Japanese "reboot" ones that came out after 2000 the best. They gave big G a more serious look than the older movies. Although i was kind of disappointed with Final Wars as it was just an attempt to get all the monsters in one movie. I'm looking forward to the upcoming new Godzilla film for 2014 though!

I've watched Godzilla since I was a small kid, it was my introduction to Japanese stuff (stuff I knew was Japanese). I tried to find every Godzilla movie, but many were not released over here for a while, sadly. I remember being excited for the 1998 godzilla movie, and walking out all pissed off, I knew then it was horrible...the next money in school, kids were talking about how awesome it was, and I said it was the worst thing I had seen...then I went back to playing with my Pokemans.

Yeah I remember it was really hard back then to find out very much information about the movies, like the order and how many there were. I went to one of our local libraries and borrowed a few books on Godzilla that only went up through the end of the Showa era.

Yeah the 98 Godzilla was pretty bad. AVGN described it best in his Godzillathon series. I wasn't really a fan of Final Wars either. Although the guy with the moustache was hilarious because of how bad ass he was trying to be.

I also made the mistake of playing a lot of the Godzilla games at the time - the NES games, Super Godzilla, and that....that thing...for Game Boy. I also remember that tease in Nintendo Power for Godzilla Destroy All Monsters for SNES, and I intend to soon rectify that lost opportunity... 8)

I loved Godzirra 1985 when it came out. But, haven't seen it in over a decade. It may be terrible and I've just forgotten LOL!

I actually begged my mom for that Godzilla fighting game, Kaiju Daikessen, luckilly we had a store in the area (a few towns over) that sold import games. None of my friends wanted to play it because it was in Japanese...more godzilla for me.

I wish I still had it.

I've actually never really been a fan. But if I had to choose, I would pick the better made/serious ones. I'm really hit and miss with movies, no one genre is my favorite.

Heck yeah! Godzilla is one of my favorite movie series. And of course I don't count the 98 movie as a Godzilla movie, as it had nothing to do with the character. my favorite movies of the series are Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, Godzilla vs Biollante and (surprise, surprise) Final Wars. The first two I like probably because those are the two I've seen as a kid. Final Wars was just awesome and I liked how Godzilla dealt with the American fake.

Yeah the Godzilla vs Zilla scene was pretty good.

Speaking of Godzilla vs. Biollante, it looks like its finally coming to Region 1 DVD and BluRay next month week! With the recent release of Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla vs. Megalon, that just leaves Godzilla 1985 as the only one unreleased on R1 DVD.

That's King Ghidorah. He actually has three heads, but one is going down-right out of frame there.

I don't consider myself a huge Godzilla fan, but I like them well enough. Mostly I've just watched them if they happen to be on TV.

I did pick up this box set a while back (the older version with the individually packaged DVDs, not the newer "shove everything into one smaller case" version)... But I've only watched Gojira so far.

@Dr. Agon - Yeah, that's King Ghidorah. What's interesting about that particular version is that it was the only version where Ghidorah was actually a hero. In that movie, Godzilla, Mothra & King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Godzilla is just an unstoppable force, and Baragon, Mothra and Ghidorah are ancient monster guardians of Japan. It's definitely worth a watch.

@JDavis - Yeah I picked up that set, and I really like it. I was about to get the 50th Anniversary set that has 9 movies on 7 DVDs to complement that (which goes for $75 - $120 online), but I discovered that buying the movies it contains separately is much cheaper.

Project name? If you want one based on a Godzilla monster: http://godzilla.wikia.com/wiki/Kaiju

Just ordered a bunch of Godzilla DVDs for my collection on Amazon - that Super Saver Shipping really saved me a lot! I think I'm now just missing:

-Godzilla vs The Sea Monster
-Destroy All Monsters (recent DVD release)
-Godzilla vs Hedorah
-Godzilla vs Gigan
-Godzilla vs Megalon (recent DVD release)
-Godzilla 1985 (whenever it gets released, though I have a home-made one for now)
-Godzilla (1998 US) .... maybe... ugh, I hate being a completionist...

I might have to dig up and post my Godzilla series custom DVD covers and post them. I did them a while back, before I came to this site. I never finished the front for Vol. 2, but I can at least share what I have.

If you're really going to be a completest, don't forgot some of the barely-connected films like "War of the Gargantuas" and "Space Amoeba" :P
