I'm anticipating the release of the Wii U, but when I think about the games that I want to play on it, it's really games that are throwbacks/have that retro-goodness, like New Super Mario Bros. U and some of the eShop releases (Mutant Mudds, etc.).

If I really stop to think about it though, the majority of current-generation games that I play have some sort of classic element to them. In this regard, I think the Wii was a pretty solid console (jokes of the visuals being a generation behind aside). I loved many of the side-scrollers and the ability to play them with a simple, NES-like controller. Games like Donkey Kong Country Returns, Mega Man 9 and 10, Konami's Rebirth series, as well as the Kirby games, were all a lot of fun. Not to mention having access to many older games on the Virtual Console (I've recently been discovering the Turbo Graphx 16, which I could never attempt to collect physically).

One of the few franchises that I completely missed out on when I was younger but enjoy the crap out of now is Castlevania. Needless to say, I have been righting that wrong over the past several years. I haven't had the opportunity to play the recent Lords of Shadow, but I've heard decent things and I can see the clout of the name being enough to hook me.

I'm moving on to Wii U, but then again I am a Nintendo fan through and through. Even so, I do have a backlog of Wii games, but I can play them on the Wii U, so it's more for me to play during future slow game release periods.

If Microsoft and Sony can prove to me why I should have a 720 or PS4, I will consider it, but for now I don't have any interest in them, mostly because all I've heard is "they will be better". For me, they just don't have franchises or experiences that interest me. Sony has yet to have a game that makes me want to go buy their system. It's not a slight against them, their fans, or their games, it just isn't my taste in games right now. Microsoft's direction of late perplexes me, but I'm certainly open to looking at both with an open mind when they show them.

I'm going to get a Wii U, but nothing else.

It's mostly a matter of "How do I feel about what the three companies did during the last generation, and what their console brought me?" I saw Microsoft charging for online and inserting ads onto the dashboard, Sony pushing console prices over twice what they were during the last generation and struggling with basic online securtiy, and both companies having rather horrid failure rates. All the while, 3rd parties were putting ads in their games, day-1 DLC, on-disc DLC, DLC required to complete main story modes, overpriced DLC, and releasing glitch-filled messes with the promise that, 'We'll patch it in...a few months...".

At the same time, the fanbases of these consoles grew to annoy me. No, not the typical fans, but the horrid fanboys that patrol the message boards of the internet. The sort of people who make it their job to insult the other companies' products (for example, calling the Wii U childish, claiming not a single decent game existed on the Wii, mocking Sony's E3 2012 presentation just because of Wonderbook, mocking Microsoft's E3 2012 presentation just because of Usher), bicker over profit margins, create conspiracy theories as to why their game only got a 9.7 instead of the 10 it deserves, and argue about what counts as 'winning' a generation. At the same time, the emphasis on graphics that existed during previous generations seemed to grow into an obsession (no doubt fuelled by the Wii's less-than-stellar graphical capabilities), with a game's quality often being decided upon graphics alone. This doesn't even get into the 'hardcore' and 'casual' argument, having to deal with sexist, xenophobic, homophobic 12-year-olds online, etc.

Now, that's not to say nothing good came of the PS3 and 360. They had some very nice RPGs. Glitches aside, the Elder Scrolls is one of my all-time favorite series. Valve kept on making fantastic games (but never, never more than twice). Halo was pretty good (at least, for a while). Indie games thrived on these platforms more than ever before. Likewise, I'm not saying that Nintendo fanboys don't do any of the things I listed above. One look at the GameFAQs Vita board (*shudder*) would tell you otherwise. But it appears, to me at least, that the bad outweighs the good, and the Nintendo fanbase is, if not less vile than the Sony or Microsoft fanbase, at least more tolerable.

Will I someday buy a PS4 / XBox 720 (or whatever they decide to call them)? Probably. But I doubt it'll be before this new generation ends.

I actually HATE achievements/trophies. I feel that they just suck the joy out of games for some people, turning gaming into a contest of "who has the most points?", as if its at all important.

I dunno, I guess I just don't need a log of points or whatever to make me feel like I've accomplished something or that I'm better than whoever at some game of games.

I suppose it's all in how you look at it. Sure, they can take away from the game experience in many cases but I like getting them but not for getting them's sake. For me, its mainly a way of going back and remembering all the things I did in that game.

Few things I wont do, that is to get trophies etc that are absolutely ridiculous, meaning retarded hard modes, speed runs etc etc. I pretty much play the game normally and get what I get, which is neat, then go back (if I want to on that game) and get the rest. I got the platinum trophy on skyrim for example but it didnt take away from the experience at all, it just meant I did literally everything the game had to offer.

It depends are the games download only, or are they locked to one console only.

If either happens I will not buy them.
Actually I'm happy with my SNES at the moment. ;)

Sony and Microsoft both say "no" at the moment to both of those things.  We'll see...

If games are "married" to consoles, then no, fuck them.  They can shove that BS up their asses and watch their businesses crumble.

I think we are heading towards the digital only era at speed.  I have had quite a few recent PS3 titles, and all my Vita titles come without manual.  I think that getting people used to not getting much inside the case is their 1st step towards digital only.  I will still want the new generation systems, but will have absolutely no problem with having a hacked machine at the point they stop giving me a tangible product.

I for one will be buying a Wii U at launch.  I had attempted to pre-order it, about two days after it was avalable for pre-order, but at my local GameStop they were completly out of avalable units.
I've never bought a Microsoft or Sony console at launch, never will since most the games on either console are not interesting to me, I traded two PSP's for my 360.
There is just a whole lot of greatness going on with the Wii U.
I've already pre-ordered Zombi U!
