But I've always accepted that Mario doesn't really have a story and there isn't really any canon. But maybe not........

My understanding is that the person who discovered it found it by reading through the game code. It wasn't anything by accident or something like that.

I was just a little disapointed that he left out the American verson of SMB2. It would have been easy to include since it's a dream. He could have included it anywhere.
Just because the Japanese SMB2 was the original, doesn't mean the American version should be excluded. Both versions were eventualy released in both contries, therefore, both games should be part of the Mario universe.
