I really hope it's not too much of a fad. I mean, I'm working towards starting a brand that caters to OG gaming, so I'd like it to stay "trendy" for at least a little while longer.  Even so, I'm not a fan of current SNES game prices.  It's hands down my fav system to collect for, and there are games that I absolutely REFUSE to buy at current prices.  Pisses me off >:(  I think I'm gonna start hunting down all the N64 games that I'll ever want before THEY get too pricey  :-\

Hopefully things just die down a bit.  I think that the retro market will work out like music and film.  At some point there will be enough reproduction material and means by which to play the older games on their respective systems affordably that the prices for some of the more outrageous items will come down.

Hopefully...

Gotta love the 64, first system I finished collecting all the games I wanted for it, super cheap

All disc based systems are becoming a pain, I dont collect CIB for my cart games but try and do so for my discs and finding them in good shape gets pricey

I'm not even going to consider collecting for disc-based systems, personally.  Given the condition of some of the NES games I've seen it'd be a miracle if half of the used discs even still work.  Cartridges are hardy and durable, discs not so much.

I think retro game collecting will always be a popular thing to do, but what people will call "retro" will move to newer systems. The NES and SNES will no longer be in the spotlight because no one will have grown up with it anymore.

While there are those little snot-nosed brats on YouTube who are less than half as old as the games they're collecting, most of the retro game market is driven by nostalgic guys and gals in their 20's 30's and 40's who are looking to find something fun they used to do when they were kids. So in 5 years, N64 stuff will be considered retro and get pricey, in 10 years it'll be PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, etc, and in 15 years it'll be the 360, PS3, etc.

This is why I'm focusing on N64 stuff now since the prices are so crazy low - I'm almost done collecting my personal "greatest hits" and I've spent less than $50. PS2 stuff is also at rock bottom right now price-wise - I don't think I've paid over $4 for a single game, save FF10 which was $7. I never had a PS2 until two years ago, but I remember playing the games with friends in highschool and when they're under $5 a pop, it's hard to say no even if you only played it once.
I'm looking for vol. 2, 4, and 5 of the Orchestral Game Music Concert CDs. I'll pay well if it's authentic and doesn't skip. :)

I have a refurbished N64, but I only have two games for it: "Super Mario 64" and "Ocarina of Time".

In my opinion, what really hurt the system was its lack of great-quality games. Third party titles were mostly about sports and RPGs, but everything else was minimized. Even some of Nintendo's own icons were absent, like Samus Aran from the "Metroid" series. Mega Man barely made a positive imprint, and franchises like "Street Fighter" or "Double Dragon" were completely ignored. Most of the developers sided with disc-based systems, and it hurt the N64 library a great deal. All told, that system has the least number of titles available, with just 387 official releases. From those, the U.S. only got 299 of them.

Moviefan and Scarmullet are obviously PS1 guys.  :P

No, the 64 didn't have a lot of RPGs, but it really excelled in everything else, at least in my opinion. Some of my favorites of all time are on that system, but then again, I'm not a big RPG guy (until recently).

The hard-core elitist RPG fans don't consider Zelda games part of the fold because they are all real time action without turn-based instances.

Don't you know? All RPG's need to come from Japan and look like an anime to be part of the cult.  ;D ;)

(I know I know, Zelda came from Japan too)

Is it bad that those type of rpg's are typically the ones I enjoy the most?  Lol

Not that there's anything bad with non-anime rpg's

I think that retro gaming will always have it's fanbase and hardcore collectors.  So there will always be a market for it.  I just think that in time half these "collectors" will fade away and hopefully put the market in a more affordable state where things aren't over priced.

This is exactly what I'm banking on, and early indications have definitely led me to believe that I'm tappig into a growing market relatively early on, which can only help my case ;)

Nope, nothing wrong at all, I'm just busting your chops.  ;)

I'm a big anime fan too so I've been getting into Japanese RPG's recently. It's a cool genre and I wish I had jumped on the bandwagon earlier!

Yep, some of this N64, PS1, and PS2 stuff will start to go up pretty soon since that's the next wave. I'm pumped for the day when I can sell some $4 purchases for $40.  ;D

Along the same lines as wiggy's thinking, I always though if someone were to make custom  gaming shelving/storage with the current trend might be good money. For example - Shelf capable of holding 300 games, but each shelf could be customized with labels per system or the entire unit entirely.

You're telling me :\ all the ps1 jrpg's that I would love to own now are insanely priced lol especially the Tales of games.  If I had known then what I know now lol I would've got them then even without owning the system to play them on.

But at least some are still cheap...they're the greatest hits versions but at this point i'm not paying triple that price for the black label ones.  Hopefully some more will go onto the psn store and maybe drive down the price of the physical copies.

PS2 isn't so bad just yet...there isn't as many over priced games except the .hack series and possibly Shin Megami Tensei games.

But lesson learned...I'm stocking up now on the games I know I'll want before they become over priced especially with current gen systems.
