Retrogame collecting just a fad?
wiggy:
I really hope it's not too much of a fad. I mean, I'm working towards starting a brand that caters to OG gaming, so I'd like it to stay "trendy" for at least a little while longer. Even so, I'm not a fan of current SNES game prices. It's hands down my fav system to collect for, and there are games that I absolutely REFUSE to buy at current prices. Pisses me off >:( I think I'm gonna start hunting down all the N64 games that I'll ever want before THEY get too pricey :-\
Hopefully things just die down a bit. I think that the retro market will work out like music and film. At some point there will be enough reproduction material and means by which to play the older games on their respective systems affordably that the prices for some of the more outrageous items will come down.
Hopefully...

Gotta love the 64, first system I finished collecting all the games I wanted for it, super cheap
All disc based systems are becoming a pain, I dont collect CIB for my cart games but try and do so for my discs and finding them in good shape gets pricey

I'm not even going to consider collecting for disc-based systems, personally. Given the condition of some of the NES games I've seen it'd be a miracle if half of the used discs even still work. Cartridges are hardy and durable, discs not so much.

I think retro game collecting will always be a popular thing to do, but what people will call "retro" will move to newer systems. The NES and SNES will no longer be in the spotlight because no one will have grown up with it anymore.
While there are those little snot-nosed brats on YouTube who are less than half as old as the games they're collecting, most of the retro game market is driven by nostalgic guys and gals in their 20's 30's and 40's who are looking to find something fun they used to do when they were kids. So in 5 years, N64 stuff will be considered retro and get pricey, in 10 years it'll be PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, etc, and in 15 years it'll be the 360, PS3, etc.
This is why I'm focusing on N64 stuff now since the prices are so crazy low - I'm almost done collecting my personal "greatest hits" and I've spent less than $50. PS2 stuff is also at rock bottom right now price-wise - I don't think I've paid over $4 for a single game, save FF10 which was $7. I never had a PS2 until two years ago, but I remember playing the games with friends in highschool and when they're under $5 a pop, it's hard to say no even if you only played it once.

I have a refurbished N64, but I only have two games for it: "Super Mario 64" and "Ocarina of Time".
In my opinion, what really hurt the system was its lack of great-quality games. Third party titles were mostly about sports and RPGs, but everything else was minimized. Even some of Nintendo's own icons were absent, like Samus Aran from the "Metroid" series. Mega Man barely made a positive imprint, and franchises like "Street Fighter" or "Double Dragon" were completely ignored. Most of the developers sided with disc-based systems, and it hurt the N64 library a great deal. All told, that system has the least number of titles available, with just 387 official releases. From those, the U.S. only got 299 of them.
