I actually think this is a pretty good idea, especially for insurance purposes.  I'm not sure how many of us have a large enough collection that we might want to take out a policy to cover it, but for valuables, it's always a good idea to photograph them and assess their value.  If you live in a high-crime area, or have had break-ins in the past, a catalogue of photos is sometimes the only way to prove what you had before it was stolen.

Of course, it could be fun to assess the value of your collection, piece by piece.  Mine's pretty small (about 50 games) so a quick check of Amazon will tell me all I need to know.  For those of us that have hundreds or thousands of games, though, well... that's probably not the best option.  If you really want to know, though, that's one way to do it!

^^^ that's a REALLY good point. if I were to loose my collection for some reason, I'd have no idea how to value it other than to look up every game. I really should make a database while I'm thinking about I too...

the insurance purpose thing is the main reason my father in-law asked me. we live together and he wanted to make sure if something happened my stuff was covered.
