But I should say that getting both systems is my personal preference over getting a launch ps3.  Especially considering they're age and their unknown history of possible abuse.

So rather than buy a launch ps3 because it's old and 2nd hand you'd rather search out an even older 2nd hand console.  Strange logic.    ???

Lol, well when you put it that way yes it doesn't make sense...

My logic only worked back when ps2's were being sold new for cheap, and that's when I had bought mine.  For some reason I'm still thinking you can find brand new ps2 slims on shelves lol

What I will probably do, is get the system fixed, or fix it myself...then put money back to get a slim, and keep the HDD backed up. I have a PS2 connected to an external upscaler, which does make the games look nicer than they do through the PS3, and PS1 games do upscale nicely...with a .5ms lag...atleast on Tomb Raider 2.

Judging by previous threads he's created I don't think he has a ps3 ???

Anyway, nowadays I think it's just quicker and easier to get a new ps2 (if theyre still around?) and a new ps3 instead of hunting around for a launch ps3
You would be correct to assume that I don't have a PS3, I just have some games I bought to play up at this vocational school I went to a few months ago that had a PS3, but they had no games to play on it, and to play at my uncles house, because he has a PS3. Also, I have a PS2, the original fat model, and I payed $50 for it at GameStop after my dad smashed the last one (cuz I pissed him off) that he and my mom bought from my uncle for $75, and it would probably be better for me to play my PS1 and PS2 games on a PS2, then to track down a launch model PS3, that'll probably cost me a heck of alot more then a newer one. Also, to zakurowrath, that's where I found information on what PS1, and PS2 games I can actually play on a PS3.

Actually you can scarmullet. PS1 games look beautiful in component using the PS2. The problem is that it's low res component 240p which most all modern TV's can't accept without an upscaler. Most CRT's with component inputs however can display the very low resolution.

Wow, that's the reason why people are getting a black screen? Lucky for me my projector is built around TV standards and handles 240p and just fine. ;D

Thanks zakurowrath, you saved me from having to go find a PS1 and S-video cables.  :) Now to find me some PS2 component cables...
I'm looking for vol. 2, 4, and 5 of the Orchestral Game Music Concert CDs. I'll pay well if it's authentic and doesn't skip. :)

No problem  ;) The official PS3 component cables work well with the PS2 if you wanted to go the 1st party route.

I have resolved to replace the PS3 and do a quick fix on mine that will last long enough to get my stuff off of it (Saves, DLC, downloads, etc), and transfer the hard drive over, and restore on the new system.

I'd say it makes sense because I'm pretty confident that the average, used, Slim PS2 will outlast a used launch model PS3 just because the PS3 is much more complex a machine and generates more heat.  Basically more things that can break.

I have a launch 60GB and if it ever goes I'll just go back to my Slim PS2.  I've got a 320 GB slim that gets used for PS3, PS1, DVD, Blurays, etc. while the 60GB is only used for PS2 games to hopefully extend it's life.

It's easy to fix.  Send it to someone to re-ball.  Anything else is just a patch job.

still alot of ppl don't replace the thermal paste the lies inside the heatsink, there is 2 layers of thermal paste in the older generation of the ps3, rlod happens when the heat is not dispersed, re-balling fluid will do the job correctly, to get to the inside layers for the cpu you need a razor blade and alot of patience, and the gpu is glued down is adhesive thermal paste need to be heated at 150 before you can safely remove the heatsink, if removed cold there's a chance your going to rip a ram out, or damage the soldering points in the gpu. but what i am saying is if the silicon based thermal paste inside the cpu and gpu are not replaces the heat is trapped inside both possessors, because the paste becomes rubbery you can actually remove it with your fingernail. once that done, to help prevent future heat related break downs, you can instal a 200k pot from the 3.5v wire that leaves the power supply to the pulse wire if the fan to make it run at a higher base setting, and if needed it will increase on its own, a big downfall of the older gen is once starting up the fan runs at around 25 (not alot and heat has time to gather) but with the 200k and diode you can make it run at 30% - 40% which helps.

I replaced the thermal paste, twice actually during the lifespan of my PS3. I got my $50 out of it, and I am enjoying my slim.

I used gopher mods last year. Right around this time actually. It was worth it IMO. My brother sold me his slim, so I use my slim in my living room and I have my phat in my bedroom. I use it for netflix and hulu and games like Catherine/New Vegas where the saves won't transfer/won't let me keep getting trophies. It is worth it.
