My 20Gig PS3 finally died today (2007-2012), it was a launch model, and I am surprised that it lasted this long. I do not want to replace it, as I do get alot of use from the Backwards Compatibility, the virtual Memory Card function is very handy. So, after doing some googling, I found a place called "gophermods" and I do question their legitimacy, like anyone would.

Has anyone here dealt with them? Or do people have a better suggestion?

the $200 Sony repair is a bit steep and crummy as I would not be getting my original console back and hard drive (mine is modified to fit a 12.5mm Hard Drive, when you could only get 1TB ones in that size, now they are standard sized). And Yes, I did do all the quick fixes I could find.

Yellow Light of dead? i don`t know if this has a fix, but what i know if after your console breaks it will do it again in a short time, the same for the 360`s, i would recommend buying a ps3 slim and a ps2 if you don't have one.

I have not used that particular website for PS3 repair. What sucks is you really need to do some research on these services to make sure you get a good one so that your PS3 can be reballed due to the Yellow Light of Death. There is a service that I did find on eBay that has very good feedback. Seems the only negative feedback are people who have abused their consoles or had roaches in them. I'd check them out and see if you wanna give'em a go:

It does have a fix, it's called reballing the processors to the motherboard. The early 360's also have the same problem since they generate alot of heat and have no where to dissipate it. The first model PS3's have great backward compatibility and that's why people still want them over the slims, since the slims are crippled in comparison to what they can do and don't have as many features as the first models. Also some people wanna save room and not have a PS3 and a PS2 on the same shelf, not to mention have a modern console that has HDMI out for modern TV's.

I would get a backwards compatible model PS3, but not all of my PS1 and PS2 games are compatible with the 3 models of backwards compatible PS3's. So, I'll probably get a slim one and just play my PS2 and PS1 games on that instead and have the PS3 solely for PS3 games.

Actually, the 20 and 60 gig PS3s had the emotion chip in them and were 100% compatible with PS2 games.

http://www.gophermods.com/

I found a site that had some reviews on that company...but some of the reviews were pretty negative and implied that the positive reviews were people from that company who were praising themselves to get more business.

I can't speak for the legitimacy of the site or the reviews...but if you feel uncertain about them as it is...I'd go with that gut feeling and stay away from them.

Ace you must have the later model backward compatible PS3 which is software based backward compatible only, not hardware backward compatible like the launch models. Check the model number.

The first models actually have the same chip the PS2 has for backward compatibility for 99% of PS1 & PS2 games.

There are a few obscure titles that don't play what so ever on the earliest model PS3. And even the PS2 was only 99% compatible.

After checking your model number, check the list. The launch model numbers are CECHA & CECHB. The software based backward compatible PS3's are CECHC & CECHE.

Judging by previous threads he's created I don't think he has a ps3  ???

Anyway, nowadays I think it's just quicker and easier to get a new ps2 (if theyre still around?) and a new ps3 instead of hunting around for a launch ps3

This is true, but you loose alot of benefits, like rescaling of the PS1 and 2 image quality to faux HD, virtual memory cards, instead of buying cards, just partition the drive to be used as a memory card.

Yes, you can buy video upscalers to do the scaling (some better than the PS3s scaling), but PS1 games wont play on a PS2 through component...and they cant be scaled unless you have a scaler that has Composite/S-video in as well as Component. There is the PSP option, but that has its own issues.....of course you can play PS1 games on any ps3 so I am just putting my foot in my mouth.

No you're absolutely right, the virtual memory card is a huge benefit.  Although I'll admit that playing ps1 games on the ps3 on an hd tv isn't exactly pleasing to the eyes lol.  I wouldn't play ps1 games on my ps2 cause I don't want to purchase a ps1 memory card :p

But I should say that getting both systems is my personal preference over getting a launch ps3.  Especially considering they're age and their unknown history of possible abuse.

The problem is, I have like 4-5 PS1 classics purchases, a bunch of Save games, and DLC that I may not get back as I have not been logged into the PSN for a couple years...If only there was some way to take out the hard drive, connect it to a compy (eSATA to the rescue), and use some special software to back up the drive to my compy in its entirety, put the drive in a NEW ps3, format it, and restore the contents....if only...

Actually you can scarmullet. PS1 games look beautiful in component using the PS2. The problem is that it's low res component 240p which most all modern TV's can't accept without an upscaler. Most CRT's with component inputs however can display the very low resolution.

But you are right the launch PS3 models are the best since they upscale it to HD for modern TV's internally using Sony hardware instead of a third party upscaler. Not to mention the added benefits of virtual memory cards.
