The nearest one is over a half hr away from me :( and at 5 bucks a disc I don't want to make that trip just to repair a single ps1 game.  Maybe one day i'll go there game hunting but my game purchases are done for the month.

Also, I wouldn't mind having one of those disc repair machine things, but that Venmill is just a bit out of my budget lol the other mentioned is much cheaper but still a bit out of budget for now.

well i don't know how much it is to ship, but I can clean any disc (no PS3/Bluray) for free.  so if there others that you want buffed and you will pay for shipping both ways, I have no problem cleaning them (with the Venmill 3500 for free)

Then the machine wasn't used correctly.  That's not something that would be exclusive to Wii games.  All discs are polycarbonate, so none are significantly more susceptible to damage from a buffer than another.
Well, all I know is the bottom of my original disc looked like someone had burned it in a circular motion, all over the playable side. It was brown like a coffee stain, but the surface wasn't melted.

I work in a retail store that uses the Venmill 3500 to buff discs, and I've never seen anything like what you guys are describing with the Wii discs.

We also have a disc checker device that we put the discs in after we buff them to make sure they're good. Just runs a laser through all the data to see if there's any scratches or smudges or ANYTHING that could cause problems. That thing's super picky, and we don't charge customers if we can't get the disc to pass on it.

Bluray discs are another matter, though.

PM'd :)

Also, recently I tried to play the game on my ps2 resulting in a massive failure lol.  The PS2 wouldn't even play the disc.  It recognized the fact that it was a ps1 disc but when I would choose to run it the screen would turn black and go back to that loading screen.  I read that component cables might lead to issues with ps1 games (seemed kinda odd but I had nothing to lose in switching out cables) so I tried the composite...but same issue.

In a way I'm starting to think that the disc might just have some damage on the foil side that could be causing these issues :\

Well, bumping this thread just as an update.

Thanks all in part to ShoothimNow (can't stress how thankful I am to him), I got the game resurfaced along with a few others.  Got them all back earlier today and I gotta say that the discs all looked brand new!

Unfortunately though, the disc I was having problems with is still giving me problems.  The intro movie still hangs a bit but nothing like how it hung and struggled to play.  The point where the game just simply freezes is still there :(  So right now the only options I have are

1. buy another copy of the game (disc only) and test my luck
2. buy the game off of the psn store
3. or simply play it with an emu and iso

The whole purpose of me even getting the game was to play it on the ps3 so really options 1 and 2 are the only way to go.

Maybe option 2 since the game is only 6 bucks off the psn store and I can just shelve the original copy and pretend that it still works perfectly lol but if anyone knows where I can get Breath of Fire IV for ps1 for super cheap let me know :D

well there are some other options =P

1) if you own a PS3 and a PS3-to-PS1/2 Memory Card Adapter, you could find a save after the video
2) if you have a PS2 and Free McBoot, same thing, find a save and copy it to the memory card via ulaunch =P.

If I would have known that was the problem, I would have asked for a memory card =(

And no problem btw!

I don't have a ps1 memory card or the adapter you mentioned :( but I should look into both of them.

As for the ps2 method...I actually haven't tested it currently, but before I sent out the disc to you, the ps2 wouldn't even run the disc.  It would stay at the boot screen where it would show a black disc and say it's a ps1 game, just that it never left that screen :\

I'm actually more worried about the game freezing and locking up further along since I did put a flashlight to the disc to see if the light shines through...and I counted a bunch of pin sized dots scattered about a few areas of the disc.  So, being realistic I'm sure the disc is really nothing but a coaster.  I'll try to play it on an emulator and then just swap in a burned copy if/when the game locks up to see how bad it really is.

If you're going to play it on a PS3, you don't need the memory card adapter, just find said save file and follow these steps (which I'm copy-pasting from a Gamefaqs thread):

Quote
- download the file/game save from GameFAQs that you want to be transferred to your PS3.
- plug in a usb flash drive to the PC/Laptop that has the game save downloaded
- open your flash drive, and create a folder called PS3
- inside the newly created PS3 folder, create another folder called EXPORT
- inside the EXPORT folder, create yet another folder called PSV
- inside the PSV folder place the downloaded game save

So for clarification, the hierarchy of the folders should look like this.
PS3/EXPORT/PSV/gamesave

plug the usb into your PS3 and then the game save should show up and then can be transferred to a Virtual Memory Card.

I got a save file from gamefaqs thats at the beginning that i'll try out.  It's a save file with all items and whatnot so I don't want to use it for my first run through the game...but I will use it afterwards to test the disc to see if it'll lock up anywhere else.

And thanks everyone for all these suggestions :)
