I know I've been throwing a few topics up here recently but I figured this would actually be worth asking about. I'm on amazon and I see an SNES for $15 shipped. This is a rather good bargain, were it not for one thing. Condition is "Acceptable" and the description says "you need to play with it to work."

Should I even bother with this purchase? I'm not very knowledgeable on how to repair these things so it may be a total waste. Opinions/advice on this would be very appreciated.

edit: nevermind. No sooner than I hit post the offer was gone. I need to find a cheap way to get this thing...

Well, Cartridge based systems are built to outlast cockroaches...some dont (I am looking at you, front loading NES). Sometimes if it says you need to fiddle with it, the cart slot is dirty and needs a good cleaning.

this is a method I have used and can personally vouch for.

This.  This times a billion.

I buy "broken" cart-based consoles ALL. THE. TIME.  85% of the time they just need a cleaning, and the other 15% they work just fine and the seller is a moron.

I'd have jumped on it too but I was a tad too late... the cheapest one is now closer to $40... just like the local store. I found one on ebay for $12 with free shipping so I'll keep an eye on it and see if the price jumps too high. Looks like shit but I can probably give it a paintjob... just not sure what yet.  ;)

Mind posting a link to it?  Don't worry, I won't go bidding on it or anything.

Also, might want to keep an eye on this one.

It looks like absolute shit, but if you're OK with painting them (which is what it sounds like), then I'd seriously consider this one.  The mini had the best video output, hands down.  The Game Genie won't work with it, but that's about the only issue.

It's in desperate need of a paint-job, but if I actually get one of these two, what should I do with it? I've been told that red/white would go with Nintendo but I'm not big on Nintendo stuff so idk. I want it to look passable as an authentic color scheme without being a carbon copy of a standard SNES.

I hate when people paint them goofy bright colors.  I think something like the N64 scheme would look really tasteful.  I.e. dark gray with medium/light gray switches and just leave the eject button alone.

No one in this thread is allowed to mention paint again unless paint is actually involved.

What the two consoles above are suffering from is called yellowing, and there's a way to fix it:

Retrobright - use it.

The problem will come back though.  There's no permanent fix and further chemical treatment will weaken the already damaged, brittle ABS plastic :(

I'm not a huge fan of the "fix" kits and such.

"To permanently prevent the yellowing from returning, just coat the parts with a clear acrylic varnish. "

Honestly, I found out about this stuff a couple weeks ago and it seems pretty amazing.  Definitely a better solution than painting in my opinion.

Yes, that will do the trick, but then you're painting the damned thing anyway :-\

That sounds like a good solution, but I may still want to paint the console. I'm thinking that the most I would do (to any console really) is just a silver coat with black buttons. Sleek but not overbearing. If all else fails then it might just be mainly black just to fit with my N64 and Xbox (PSX is a sore thumb right now but it doesn't need painting).

I didn't think the SNES jr could yellow...or maybe someone pissed on it...while blowing smoke from a giant cigar on it.

Yeah, I've never seen one like that.  Also notice that the yellowing is not uniform, indicating it's probably not just the plastic aging over time.

Edit: Apparently some of them do yellow, perhaps this is just an extreme case.  Also, if I had seen that $15 SNES I would have scooped it up lol.

The yellowing is generally believed to be caused by a over abundance of a chemical additive that acts as a fire retardant.  What happens is essentially hastened oxidization. Things like excessive smoke, exposure to UV light, etc can exacerbate the problem. It is less common with the SNES mini.

It's assumed that the plastic formula contained a more balanced mixture with less of the fire retardant. It's not only an issue with the color, but the plastic is actually experiencing chemical breakdown. You might notice how extremely brittle the heavily yellowed SNES systems are. The "fixes" out there are just a bandaid, and I can't help but think that they are doing even more damage to the plastic, causing it to become even more brittle and likely to yellow again.  A clear coat will help a lot, since exposure to oxygen is what really kick-starts the chemical reaction.  That's why you can pop them open and the insides are often a lot closer to the original color than the outside.

Buy the ugly mini, then grab a wiggy shell when I finally get them to market :P
