I'm not sure if this has been posted before; just looking for input/seeing what everyone else does.
I'm curious as to how you guys would choose to store PlayStation games; in DVD/PS2 cases, or in the original jewels? I'm mainly asking just because I'm not sure what to do with mine as they're all CIB except for two so I was hoping for input/general opinions.
Also, for those who convert them to DVD cases, would you keep the greenlabel/blacklabels true to what you have or just have them all match?

Looking forward to how people tackle this.

I personally only had a few PS1 games (Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VIII + IX).  I found this site after seeing the 25th anniversary Final Fantasy packaging which in and of itself encouraged me to complete my PS1 Final Fantasy collection and house them in DVD cases.  I like the look of the PS2 style covers and they match very well.  I do not use a greatest hits cover even when the game I have is that version (as it is for Final Fantasy VII).  I am planning on acquiring more PS1 games in the future and will continue to house them in DVD cases.

Pros:
* Looks great on my game shelf, don't have different sized jewel cases and such.  Size matches all other disc games (and close to UGCs).
* Don't have to worry about condition (or even existence) of jewel cases when buying used games.
* Larger manuals (Final Fantasy VII for example) won't fit.

Cons:
* Excellent condition jewel cases/art/booklets go to waste (mine are in storage)
* Some people like to have the original format
* Have to possibly spend extra time/money on cases & covers if you already have the jewel cases.

Nah, they're a worldwide thing, UmbraPhasmatis. PS1 lonboxes are just hard to come by, because their so rare. Here are the 3 variants of PS1 longboxes:

Ridged Longbox *(This is the only longbox I've encountered. My "The Need For Speed" game came in this kind of longbox.)*

That's actually a carboard/fakie as well.

Here's an actual hard case.

Some games came in a couple of different variations.  IIRC, MK3 and Resident Evil came in both ridged and jewel cases :/

I think those big PlayStation cases are cool. I usually put those next to my Sega CD or Saturn Games and then put the smaller PSone jewel cases next to them. I think they are neat to have, but they do make presentable storage a little tough.

I guess I got the wrong image, sorry. I was trying to find good enough pics of the 3 longbox case variants and I found 2 of the same variant. The jewel case longboxes look like they're the sturdiest, though. This site has a pretty good archive of longbox PS1 games with all variants: http://www.game-rave.com/psx/playstation_perfect_guide/long_box/index.htm

I figured you'd just overlooked that by accident.  You obviously knew what you meant ;)

I'm on the fence.  I think the cardboard long boxes are the most durable.  Sure, they can get torn and frayed more easily, but they don't have stupid plastic tabs that can break.  The clear cases are super fragile, and anyone that owns US Saturn games can attest to that  >:(

Sucks that there's no replacements available either :(

I'll second that wiggy the long ps1/sega cd/Saturn jewel cases were junk. But of corse since I like my collection to be as close to original as possible, that's what they are still in. Very few sega cd games actually had tall cardboard boxes that they came in. Time Gal is an example.

I still prefer my games in the small jewel cases though. More compact, easier to store and display. When u come across a good single or double jewel case at a sale, I usually pick them up. Start looking through those old junkie CDs!!
What are you looking at? You think baby's don't like video games? THEN YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT BABIES!!

FF7 is in great condition but the case has some sticker residue that just will NOT come off. It's like crusted onto the case; might even be glue for all I know.

I also have FF7 and a big CD collection, so I could easily recognize that the FF7 case is just the back part of 2 cd cases snapped into one with the black part in the middle. i also got a crappy copy with broken parts, but as long as the middle segment is ok, you can just replace them.

take two clear cd cases and take out the "door" part and ther eyou go. you can literally just snap it into the black part, just be really carefull taking out the door and the bad condition boxes from the case. i've got no trouble with that, and the manuals wont get hurt since they are placed on the black part, not in the new plastics.

I'm glad that only 2 of the PS1 games I'm after came in lonboxes, but still have regular jewel case variants; which is a bit less of a headache for me. The 2 games I'm getting that were originally made in longboxes, but still have regular case variants are: Road & Track Presents: The Need For Speed and Twisted Metal. Also, that link I posted has the proper names for the types of longboxes. I guess I kinda just guessed at their names at 1st.

The names of the types of longbox cases are:
1. Long Box Saturn Style (Clear)
2. Long Box Ridged (Bumpy)
3. Long Box Flat (Cardboard)

Jewel cases are SOOOOO cheap.  Just pick up a handful at Best Buy or something.  No excuse for crusty jewel cases unlike the horrible Saturn cases.

You can also be a cheap-ass bastard and pull that part of the jewel case off and just soak it in some soapy water overnight.  That might do the trick ;)

Same here.  Only Jumping Flash and my original copy of Resident Evil were longbox.  Both are in Jewel cases now with the longboxes stashed away :)

Good lord I feel so stupid for not noticing that, especially as ocd as I am with shelf display.  :P

I have a limited amount of space on my retro game shelf (if Xbox and PS2 can be considered obsolete enough), so jewels seem to be the way to go. I can adjust the shelving to stack the jewels on top of each other as well so they seem to be the best use of space.

Also, what are the dimensions of the longbox? Is the manual insert just twice as high as the PS1 manuals or is it closer to an Xbox/PS2 booklet?

Nah. I just got into legit collecting about three months ago. I don't have any Sega consoles because I hear mixed opinions on those.
