General opinions on PS1 storage

I'm not sure if this has been posted before; just looking for input/seeing what everyone else does.
I'm curious as to how you guys would choose to store PlayStation games; in DVD/PS2 cases, or in the original jewels? I'm mainly asking just because I'm not sure what to do with mine as they're all CIB except for two so I was hoping for input/general opinions.
Also, for those who convert them to DVD cases, would you keep the greenlabel/blacklabels true to what you have or just have them all match?

Looking forward to how people tackle this.

I don't have many right now, so for me it was an easy choice.  I'm putting them all into DVD cases, using the template based on the PS2 games rather than the one Sony used on the Metal Gear Solid Essentials version of Metal Gear Solid.  I'm also not a normal collector, as I actively hunt down the final release versions of the games, so I'm more than happy with my Greatest Hits Final Fantasy VII and have it in a Greatest Hits Case, although I actually customized the cover to have a red label.  This is to keep it in line with my PS2 games, which is why I decided on the DVD cases anyway, for some uniformity.

I'm mainly getting the games regardless of GH/blacklabel since I collect games to have the games and not for the value (although blacklabel is always nice). That's an interesting idea with the GH cases... I've considered using spare Xbox cases to hold the Greenlabel Hits but the red sounds like a good idea too.

If you've got everything CIB, I'd say keep them that way, and try to complete those last few. Then, replace any dirty or damaged jewel cases with shiny new ones. Since the PS1 uses standard full sized CD cases (there's nothing special about them from what I can see and I've taken a few apart), then there's really no reason to keep the original cases if they're in rough shape. CD cases are also the cheapest option since they're so common. I see it as a win-win - you keep everything in "proper" original casing, and you get to make everything look like new as well.

Personally, I do just that - I buy used but complete PS1 games, and then replace any damaged jewel cases with brand new ones. Some stuff on eBay is listed for really cheap just because the case is scratched to all hell. The beauty is that the disc, manual, and cover art are usually in great to like-new shape since the case took all the damage. Once I swap them out, they look like they've hardly been touched.

Yeah I got all of my games CIB except for three since I got majority of them when the PS1 was still on the market. Namco Museum was CIB but I don't know where any of the tray insterts or manuals are. Forbidden Memories came disc-only, and Rebel Assault II (a meh game imo) was missing the manual. So it's mainly those few that I'm looking for. Plus my local retro shop sells almost everything CIB and usually in really good shape. PS1 games are cheaper than dirt for the most part too (<$5), till you get to the serious titles (Final Fantasy VII for $54.99). My main concern is about the multi-disc cases. FF7 is in great condition but the case has some sticker residue that just will NOT come off. It's like crusted onto the case; might even be glue for all I know.

Back on topic. Thanks for the input, jewels might actually help me save space but how would I go about printing the double-sided tray inserts for those few games that I'm missing? I can't even find artwork for Namco Museum on here...

The way they came (unless longbox, in which case I've made jewel cases for them).  Too much work to change something that honestly works about perfect.

I was collecting pal ps1 games for a while, and was gona recase them all in plastic cases similar to the sizes of the original fat boxes, but it because to much work and i lost interest lol, plus the rising game demand on my local  auction site made prices for ps1 games to expensive for my tastes so i gave up. heres a link to the forum i was doing ages ago for a show of the cases i used

If the came in a jewel case originally, then the manual will fit in a replacement jewel case. Games with excessively thick manuals came in double wide jewel boxes, which can still be purchased.

When I first started collecting ps1 I didnt care disc only or not, now I try and get them all in original jewel cases. I got tired of having to get different cases for multi disc games.

While the custom artwork for them are nice I am ok with jewel cases even if its just they take less space in most scenarios

Even with the jewel cases that ps1 games came in originally you'll run the risk of damaging the manuals  I know because the person who I got my ps1 games from has a lot of damage on most manuals and I doubt he cared about replacing the cases.  But then again, PAL versions might be different since those cases are different then the ntsc ones and I would assume PAL manuals would have the manuals in more then 1 language making them a bit thicker.

But to be on topic...I much prefer to have them in jewel cases over anything else because I actually like how the cover art was designed...and it'd be a shame to not be able to see the inside tray art if transfering them into dvd cases or other types of cases.

I use 8-disc poly cases for my PSone games. If i have the original cases i place them inside the case itself. It fits perfectly with no bulging whatsoever (obviously those multidisc cases are too wide though).

I do this so my games are still uniform but i can still keep the original cases without taking up any extra space.

I've been designing my own covers for more or less all of my games (you guys don't have Jeopardy or Family Feud lol) recently but it's come to my attention that with all of those SNES games I got, I need to find some way to cram all of my PSX games on my not-so-large gaming shelf (I'll post pics in the gallery soon enough). That added to the fact that I don't need to spend the money on more dvd boxes (also noting that the double-wide dvd box I use for FF8 can't hold the manual too well) leads me to believe that the original jewels would be the way to go.

Also I've never in my life seen the longboxes in person. Are they a PAL-only thing?

Got most of them when PSX was still outselling the PS2, and before that. So they're all legitimate CIB, although my copy of Dino Crisis has been missing the RE3 demo disc for years now...

On topic again. I'll probably stick with the jewels (8-poly sounds like an acceptable compromise if I ever get any), but if you wanna leave your opinions here still, keep 'em coming; it's still interesting to see how people organize their collections.

Nah, they're a worldwide thing, UmbraPhasmatis. PS1 lonboxes are just hard to come by, because their so rare. Here are the 3 variants of PS1 longboxes:

Lol, Believe me, if they were mine from the beginning I'd definitely have taken better care of them but since they came from a kid that was years younger who didn't really care about taking care of things...well...manuals are one of the first things to go   But I can't complain...since my mom worked for the kids mom, she was able to bring a few games home since the kid outgrew the ps1 and all his games were being thrown out.  I just wish my mom still worked for her because he had a bunch of other games and systems
