So I just recently picked up some games: Heavenly Guardian (Wii for $1) & Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom (360 for $3). Never heard of the games before seeing them in a Goodwill and both received average to below average reviews, but I really enjoyed both games quite a bit! I'm sure there's probably been a thread like this before, but I'm interested in recommendations from you guys about relatively cheap/obscure games that went under the radar because of the reviews. Another game I'm considering picking up is Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon - it seems to have a small following of people who actually really loved it regardless of the reviews.

Off the top of my head Haunting Starring Polterguy on the Sega Genesis comes to mind right away as a hidden gem.  It doesn't seem to get much fanfar, but I think it's one of the more unique and certainly one of the more fun vintage games out there.

I'd also suggest B.O.B., The Lost Vikings, Chuck Rock (both of them), and DeCapAttack on the Genesis as well.  They might not be the most critically acclaimed or well know titles, but I sure found them fun as all heck.

I love me some Haunting, B.O.B., Lost Vikings and DeCap Attack! I'm looking up prices on Chuck Rock now! Looks really fun, but I heard it's pretty difficult.

If you're into decap attack, then check out Marvel Land for the JP Mega Drive.  Really, REALLY similar.

Yeah, they aren't the easiest games in the world.  I found Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck a bit easier than the original, but was eventaully able to beat both.  Price wise they aren't bad at all.  I got both on eBay for right around $9 each (with shipping) complete and in great condition.

I have Chuck Rock for the Game Gear. It's fun to play every so often.

Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon - it seems to have a small following of people who actually really loved it regardless of the reviews.

I played and really enjoyed that game.  The controls took a bit to get used to, and the game does play a bit slow at times and there is some occasional backtracking.  I'll admit though I did put the game down for a long while before picking it back up and finishing it but when I did finish it I regretted not finishing it sooner.  The story did really interest me, and the little "memory pieces" that you pick up do also provide even more to the story.

Wow that game looks great! It really has that similar jumping arc like DA and really cool looking power ups.

I am more into the RPG games, dunno if you are or not or have much interest in playing an old PS1 title but my family picked up Guardian's Crusade when it came out for i think $20 (at the time)

Its graphics are NOTHING to brag about but it seemed to be fun with a halfway decent story line.  I remember looking for all the living dolls and feeding the Baby Dragon thing my excess armor and weapons to improve its attributes.

As a kid I actually assumed decap attack was a western marvel land, but it turns out they're not at all related. They play almost EXACTLY the same though. Someone "borrowed" an awful lot from the other.

I really really liked "Nier" - the reviews for it were quite mediocre, but I don't know - for me it had something really special - the style, the characters, it was just really unique and I thought it was extremely underrated.

I'm building a list now! Just looked up a review where a person actually loved it, this is right in my ballpark! Love the replay value the game has to offer to understand the full story. Thanks man!

If I had to pick one game, I'd go with Shadowrun on the Super Nintendo.  I've said in other posts that it's my favorite SNES RPG, and it's the truth!  That game gets overlooked pretty often, since there's so many other 16-bit RPG's with critical acclaim, but for my money, it's just as good as any Final Fantasy or Phantasy Star game.  Look it up!!

Edit:  Upon looking at prices, egad, this game has skyrocketed!  It's not exactly affordable, but if you can get it on the cheap, look into it!

One game that *is* cheap, and often overlooked, is Hybrid Heaven on the Nintendo 64.  It's a pretty cool sci-fi RPG, with fighting game elements.  Definitely one of my favorite N64 games, and pretty unique, too!

^^^ I just grabbed that about a month ago (Hybrid Heaven). Still have to try it out. But like oh said, it can be had for next to nothing.  This is the time to buy N64 games. They are CHEAP!
