RF Signals

Is RF output from American systems different to what a PAL system outputs? I recently bought a Top Loader NES for use in the UK. I have acquired a psu which should to the job however I have some problems. I can't tell if the psu or the unit is working as the nes has no led to indicate it is on. So assuming it does work, it only has RF output and I cannot get a picture from it on my old CRT (RF works fine for other systems). There is a channel 3 / 4 selector switch on the unit which is why i'm thinking the signals might not be compatible with PAL tv's (even though the tv does 60hz no problem for any systems that uses scart/rgb output).

Any ideas? I have a guy lined up to mod the system to give me composite output but he can't do it for a few weeks yet. Can anyone confirm if I am along the right lines here or could this be another problem?

PAL =/= NTSC.

Problem is probably that your trusty UK TV (= PAL) can't understand US (=NTSC) signal.

If you have access to modern flatscreen TV try on that as they understand all signals (thru RF not sure but thru all signals above it composite and so on definitely).

As RGB bypasses the color coding difference if shows up.

The crt tv displays my American SNES fine but that is using the scart socket. My lcd tv allocates all the channels for tv stations i cant figure out a way to get an RF signal to be displayed on it, this is assuming the power supply and nes themselves are working.

As RGB sends colors in directly it bypasses the PAL/NTSC/SECAM color coding problem.
See if you get color image or even image if you plug in SNES using non RGB scart (red/white/yellow RCA cable with scart adapter).

Well im using a cheap AV cable with a scart adapter with my snes and I believe they are not wired up for RGB (I think only the Nintendo branded ones are) and it works. However i'm not sure, I will look into tuning my LCD tv tomorrow when i dig the manual out for it.

If it's scart adapter (it has red/white/yellow RCA) it's not RGB. 
So if you get color with that cable your TV can do NTSC too, as it's old TV it should do it thru RF too.
Sounds like problem with NES or the power adapter.
Make sure that power adapter has correct voltage and + and - are correct way.

Hopefully your other TV solves the problem.
