I think I paid about $90 for X-men vs Street Fighter for the Saturn and the same for the Japanese House of the Dead 2 set that came with the gun and the EU version of Shenmue 2 both for the Dreamycast.

I'm sort of a cheap bastard, and I hunt for deals like its my job, so I prolly won't pay that much for a game again for a while.
Since when is $90 considered cheap for anything? I think one of my best deals was probably getting "Tiny Toon Adventures" for $3.

When it's a game you really REALLY want and you cannot find it anywhere, that's the price to pay.  He did state that he will probably never pay that much for a game again for a while.  You never finished reading his statement.

It's not like we are spending $100 on every single game we own.  Some cost more and I am proud to be one of the 2500 people who own a Donkey Kong Country Competition Cart!

I read his statement all the way through, but the fact that anyone would pay such a price for a video game is absurd to me. I think the most expensive retro games I own are "Super Metroid", and "Ocarina of Time", each being $20.

Those games all came out 10 or so years ago. I figured one could surmise that I've since become far more miserly and not that I've always been so.

Also, 100 for Chrono Trigger and Hang Time?!  I don't recall ether being that pricey. I think I paid 70 for Chrono Trigger and I can't think of a single game that was more than 70 bucks for the N64 at release and I was workin game retail during the entire lifespan of the N64.

Maybe he's out of states? (wouldn't Canadian games be more expensive..well...looking anyway) or he paid shipping and a big tax? I know some of the Square games were pretty pricey on SNES

I gotta be honest - at the time they came out, $100 was about the going rate for Chrono Trigger and NBA Hang Time.  Phantasy Star IV was the same was on the Genesis, as was Virtua Racing.  I specifically remember shopping in a Target store when Chrono Trigger was new, and seeing it retail for $89.99.  After sales tax, you're pushing $100, easy!

Cartridge games used to cost *A TON* especially when larger-format games (32 megabits of memory or more) became the norm for the SNES.  The night I bought my Nintendo 64, in April of 1997, I remember going to Bigg's (remember that store?) and buying Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for $84.99.  That's just what N64 games retailed for back then - ask anyone that got Super Mario 64 or Pilotwings on launch day.

OOOOOOK, enough of that rant!

Most I've ever paid for a game: $160 for Panzer Dragoon Saga.  I no longer own it, but I'm pretty sure I made my money back when I sold it.  It's an EXCELLENT game, for those of you that haven't tried it out.  If it didn't sell for $200+ nowadays, I'd recommend that every Saturn owner pick it up.  If the going rate were more like $20 or $30, it would be a no-brainer.

Most prized game in my collection: Phantasy Star Online Version I & II Plus.  I bought it when it was released from Best Buy, and Paid $29.99 plus tax.  The game was released as a "budget" game at the time, though there aren't that many of them out there.  Honestly and truly, I *LOVE* that game, and still play it on a regular basis.  I only have about 30 games in my collection, and that one isn't going anywhere!

Runner-up for most prized game: Phantasy Star II for the Sega Genesis, complete with case, manual, maps, and hint book.  I'm a fan of the entire Phantasy Star series, although this one and PSO I & 2 are the only ones I still own.  Personally, I think that Phantasy Star IV is the best game in the series, but PS II has a lot of nostalgia for me.  Seriously, a lot.  I wasted a lot of time in high school with that game, and when I think of it's mindbender of an ending, as well as it's infamous "death scene" for a certain party member, I get chills.  The day I beat it was one of my favorite moments as a gamer, and even though the game is clunky, poorly translated, and confusing as hell, I'll probably keep it until my dying day.  It just means a lot to me, you know?

Anyway, awesome thread!  I can't wait to see what comes next!!

Most I have paid for a game: $130 - for a near mint Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Box Set for the PS1.

It came with everything and the box is in as close to new condition as you can get.

The pendant still had the pouch and the stand up figures were sealed.

I actually only planned to spend $100 on it, however, living in Canada customs got a hold of it and hit me with 13% HST and a $15 "handling fee".

I'm actually a lot like "Moviefan" in that I try to be thrifty, however, I will spend big $ on a game that I know will give me hours of enjoyment and Lunar II will do exactly that.  Also, I understand the whole dwindling supply / increasing demand thing so I get that prices are going to keep going up so I can tell when people are pricing things fairly or not.  I also have a good job that allows me to occasionally splurge and spend some cash on a more expensive game without hindering myself financially.

As for most prized it would probably be my SNES carts such as Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy II and III.

These were my favorites growing up and I like knowing that I can go back and play them on the original hardware as I played them when they first came out.

Not at all, but the way I figure it, if folks are willing to mention how they pay tons of cash for a game, then I should have the same freedom to make my stance known against it. Even if I had $100 or more to spend on each game I wanted, I'd still look for the cheapest deal; its called being sensible. On average, I could probably get between 7 & 10 Blu-Ray movies for $100, maybe even more...so anyone spending the same amount on a 20-year-old game cartridge sounds very foolish to me.

So maybe we can just agree to disagree and keep it too ourselves from now on, eh?

but supplys of sealed/mint copies of, clash of the titans, for eg. on blu-ray are high, more than enough to meet demand, whereas supplys of, DKC compitition, for eg.  are low, so prices for the blu-ray are going to be lower than the price for the cart, even if it is 20 years old...

Regarding the $100 Chrono Trigger and NBA Hangtime, I do happen to live in Canada, and when those games were released, our dollar was quite weak (unlike today, we were only getting 75 cents on the American dollar) so I imagine that has a lot to do with the inflated prices. When I first spotted Chrono Trigger, I was priced at $99. I was forced to rent it first in order to ensure that I liked it before we dropped the $100 on it.

I'd get way more enjoyment out of Lunar 2 than I would out of 7-8 Blu-rays.

Plus Blu-rays will most likely drop in price and won't become collectable for a long time, if ever.

To each his own I guess.

The only difference is that your "stance" is presented in an insulting and offensive manner, whereas we are only citing what we've paid for a particular game or games, which has nothing to do with you or your opinions.  How would you like it if we all replied sighting a decision of yours as "absurd" or "foolish"?   People pay more than 20 bucks for games sometimes.  Get over it.
