One of the games that I am most proud to own is the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy for the SNES. I had been seeking this game for a long time.

I used to collect action figures and earlier this year I sold them off so I could pump that money into my collection. I picked up Ninja Gaiden Trilogy for $85.

The next game that I am itching to own is Mighty Final Fight for the NES! :)

...its all Hiragana on the cover, and I cant read it.
Then how do you know its Hiragana? ;)

Because I am Otaku enough to know the difference between Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.

If i had to pick any one system I have games for it would be SNES by far, have a lot of the rare games which I am proud of, mainly because I stuck to my guns and got them all for complete steals

To list: off the top of my head

Hagane
Ninja Gaiden Trilogy

Earthbound for me is a love/hate relationship, I must have owned it 13 times since it was released. Went through 4 or 5 boxed versions closer to when it came out, kept buying them from video stores and selling them for other things. (yes, I hate myself for it now)

Got it finally to keep for good about a year ago when they were going 130-175ish, found it on craigslist for 60$ cart only but new looking, works for me

Don't feel bad, I don't currently have a copy either. I used to when it was worth nearly nothing back in the late 90's, but sold it because it was pretty far from my favorite SNES RPG. I would like to pick it up again eventually, but there's no way in hell I'm paying current prices. I hope the bubble bursts on that one at some point. It's selling for WAY more that it's worth at the moment IMO.

I couldn't agree more!  I remember renting the game back when it came out, just because Nintendo Power had hyped it up so much.  I got to the part of the game where you're in a desert, and some guy near a mine (I think) is starving, and needs you to feed him something.  I didn't hate the game - in fact, I loved the soundtrack - but I agree, it's far from my favorite SNES RPG.

Hell, if I had to list my favorite three, on the system, I'd go:

1) Shadowrun
2) Ultima: The False Prophet
3) Final Fantasy III / VI

I'm not much of a fan of JRPG's, though I've beaten both SNES Final Fantasy games, as well as The Secret of Mana.  I do hold the Phantasy Star series on the Genesis pretty near-and-dear, but mostly for the nostalgia value, as I stated a few pages back.  The current prices for Earthbound are a lot like those for Panzer Dragoon Saga - they reflect the rarity of the games moreso than the quality.  That being said, both games are certainly well-made, and worth playing.

... and please, before the backlash starts, THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION!  I personally think the SNES Final Fantasy games are top-notch, and great games in their own right, but they just aren't my "favorite."  The same, in my opinion,  goes for Earthbound, as I believe it's a fine game, overall, but it just didn't flip my switch.  I gotta say, though - after playing it, I feel like all boss fights, in any RPG, would be made better if they had "Johnny B. Goode" as their battle theme :-D

Super Mario RPG is superior to Earthbound in just about every way. Only reason SMRPG isn't $100 is because it's a Mario game, so it had plenty of supply. :/

Earthbound probaly jumped up in value due to Ness(and later Lucas) being in Smash Bros., though I dunno why it's gone up so much over the past couple years other than bloated internet hype.

I won't say it's a bad game, but it's not worth $100 cart-only. Maybe $30-$40.

Another game that is ridiculously overpriced, but even moreso than Earthbound, is Shantae. I really don't know why people are trying to sell a Game Boy Color cart for $150+ with a straight face.

Man, speaking of great soundtracks, Panzer Saga is one of my absolute favs!  It's so subtle but always manages to do its job so perfectly without being invasive or overbearing. Love it!

Also, one of my favorite RPGs ever. I would love a remake of it more than pretty much any other game.

That actually is a pretty rare game. Even when it launched it was hard to track down. Those last few solid Saturn titles seemed to barely even make it to retail :(

I hear ya on the soundtrack - I have the battle theme memorized!  I loved the use of flutes and other woodwinds in the soundtrack, as it gave it a back-to-nature feel which was, as you pointed out, pretty subtle.

It's definitely one of my favorite RPGs, too.  I know this will get me a lot of heat, but I'd take it over any Final Fantasy game, any day.  It's a very unique game, and unlike a lot of other JRPGs, it's long enough to tell its story, but paced well enough that it wraps up fairly quickly, too.  I remember it clocking in at about 15 hours which, for me, is almost a perfect length of time for a game.

It is crazy rare, but you're right, it was next-to-impossible to get when it was released.  I remember the FuncoLand by my house had a copy sitting on the shelf for a good six months before anyone bought it.  It was the only copy they received, and Saturn interest was so low where I lived that the game just sat there and sat there.  Looking back, I should have gotten it... even though I had already traded my system for a Nintendo 64.

What else came out around that time, House of the Dead?  I think Shining Force III was one of the last games, too.  I know for a fact Magic Knight Rayearth was *the last* US Saturn game released, just because I remember reading about it when it came out, and thinking, "WTF?  They still make Saturn games???"

A very underrated system, the Saturn.  In keeping with this thread's theme, the three Saturn games I own are definitely prized possessions of mine.  I have Earthworm Jim 2, NightWarriors, and Panzer Dragoon II, all complete with manuals, foam blocks, and intact cases.  I feel like I will *never* see any of them again in the same condition, which is why I keep them.  About once a month, I break out a Saturn controller and spend some time with each of the games, just to remind myself of why I hang onto them.  Great stuff!

To be fair, I can understand the high price for most Saturn games. The thing had an even smaller lifespan that the damn Dreamcast, and while it had few releases, most of them were well-received, like Panzer Dragoon, NiGHTs, and Sonic Jam, but had limited releases compared to other console libraries.

Earthbound's excuses, by comparison, are weak.

Man, there were no 6 month old copies sitting around here in Cleveland LOL!  I think Cleveland is a really big gaming city though.  We have craptastic weather so much of the year that staying indoors becomes the norm for about 6-7 months of the year.

The only other late US release that I can think of is Burning Rangers.  Cool game, but mondo painful to look at today in comparison to modern games.

The Saturn is still the undisputed king of 2D in my opinion.  Games like Princess Crown still look incredible 15 years later!  Sega had a realy knack for making great consoles that just couldn't make it in the US market for one reason or another  :-[

How dare you Wiggy!!! Earthbound trumps Mario RPG any day....that stupid lvl cap bothered the hell out of me (and still does)

Despite having a copy of Earthbound and knowing it may drop slightly in value if a digital were released I would like to see that happen as slim a chance as it may be
