Earthbound for me is a love/hate relationship, I must have owned it 13 times since it was released. Went through 4 or 5 boxed versions closer to when it came out, kept buying them from video stores and selling them for other things. (yes, I hate myself for it now)

Got it finally to keep for good about a year ago when they were going 130-175ish, found it on craigslist for 60$ cart only but new looking, works for me

Don't feel bad, I don't currently have a copy either. I used to when it was worth nearly nothing back in the late 90's, but sold it because it was pretty far from my favorite SNES RPG. I would like to pick it up again eventually, but there's no way in hell I'm paying current prices. I hope the bubble bursts on that one at some point. It's selling for WAY more that it's worth at the moment IMO.

I couldn't agree more!  I remember renting the game back when it came out, just because Nintendo Power had hyped it up so much.  I got to the part of the game where you're in a desert, and some guy near a mine (I think) is starving, and needs you to feed him something.  I didn't hate the game - in fact, I loved the soundtrack - but I agree, it's far from my favorite SNES RPG.

Hell, if I had to list my favorite three, on the system, I'd go:

1) Shadowrun
2) Ultima: The False Prophet
3) Final Fantasy III / VI

I'm not much of a fan of JRPG's, though I've beaten both SNES Final Fantasy games, as well as The Secret of Mana.  I do hold the Phantasy Star series on the Genesis pretty near-and-dear, but mostly for the nostalgia value, as I stated a few pages back.  The current prices for Earthbound are a lot like those for Panzer Dragoon Saga - they reflect the rarity of the games moreso than the quality.  That being said, both games are certainly well-made, and worth playing.

... and please, before the backlash starts, THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION!  I personally think the SNES Final Fantasy games are top-notch, and great games in their own right, but they just aren't my "favorite."  The same, in my opinion,  goes for Earthbound, as I believe it's a fine game, overall, but it just didn't flip my switch.  I gotta say, though - after playing it, I feel like all boss fights, in any RPG, would be made better if they had "Johnny B. Goode" as their battle theme :-D

AO007:

Super Mario RPG is superior to Earthbound in just about every way. Only reason SMRPG isn't $100 is because it's a Mario game, so it had plenty of supply. :/

Earthbound probaly jumped up in value due to Ness(and later Lucas) being in Smash Bros., though I dunno why it's gone up so much over the past couple years other than bloated internet hype.

I won't say it's a bad game, but it's not worth $100 cart-only. Maybe $30-$40.

Another game that is ridiculously overpriced, but even moreso than Earthbound, is Shantae. I really don't know why people are trying to sell a Game Boy Color cart for $150+ with a straight face.
