N64 RGB mod help - I'd like to use VGA...

Hi guys,
My next project is to RGB mod a Nintendo 64 following this mod: http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/nintendo/ntsc_nintendo_64_rgb.htm
I can perform the mod itself fine, but my issue is that being in the US, I can't use SCART.

My DLP projector can handle a scan rate of 15khz natively through VGA input, so can I simply splice a VGA head onto the end of the N64 SCART lead and use it as is, or is there extra circuitry needed even if I don't need to double the scan rate?

zakurowrath:

Can your DLP accept a composite sync because that's what you get from the N64.

Normal VGA has horizontal and vertical sync, most all 15hz video game consoles use only composite sync which is horizontal and vertical in one signal.

However if your DLP can then go for it see if you get a picture, here's a guy that did it in the opposite direction VGA to SCART, same principle but you will be going the other direction. There's a pinout on his website for you.

Thanks! Just what I needed.

Unfortunately my projector needs split sync, so it looks like I'll be building/modding the RGB to VGA converter that he has listed on the site as well. Oh well, at least I know what I need to do now.

Thanks again.  :)

No problem  :D

There is one thing you could try, it depends on your DLP Projector thou. I'd honestly trust the VGA scalier over this option, but you could get a LM1881 chip, and get a vertical sync that way. The composite sync would become the horizontal sync signal and it may or may not work.

I intend to do something like this, but take it a step further...HDMI.
