Gamers and Collectors
AO007:
Well I care about the condition of my games; I accept anything "good" and above when buying, I try to get games complete whenever possible, and at least with PS1 games, I try to go for Black Label if the disc is in full-color.
Put me in G/C.
wiggy:
I only have 2 Greatest Hits PS1 games. Made me so nuts that I printed black backs for em :P

I'd say I go through phases where I collect more than I play and then it flips and I play more than I collect.
I'm currently playing more right now.
I just recently started reselling (using online classifieds) and have made about $900 in the last few months and I'm not really that aggressive or spending too much time on it.
My main goal is to try and make my collecting cash neutral so that If I am going to spend a ridiculous amount of $$ on a game then it has to come from reselling profit. I'll also buy lots if there are items I want to keep and then resell the rest to break even.
My other goal is to get games in the hands of those who want them and will play them so my prices are usually pretty low as my goal is to sell quickly, make a profit, and either buy more for my collection or more to resell.
One example was finding an SNES with a bunch of games, including the 3 Donkey Kong Country games. Most resellers in my area would ask $20 for the first 2 and $25-$30 for the third one.
I listed them at $40 and they were sold right away. After selling everything and keeping what I wanted I was up about $60 which went into the gaming fund while selling everything at what I consider to be fair prices.
I also got Metroid Prime Trilogy in a lot and let it go for $60. My cost on it was next to zero so I was happy to make a quick $60 and the person buying it was happy to have it.
One issue I have run into is other resellers buying stuff off of me and trying to sell it for more. I hate that because I want the games in the hands of those that will play them.
I found Zelda: Collector's Edition for Gamecube at a yardsale for $1 complete and mint.
I already had a copy so I checked ebay and saw people were asking $50-$100 plus shipping so I listed it at $40 and got offered $30 to deliver it and it happened to be on the way home from the yard sale so I sold it. Then the guy had it up for sale 5 mins later for $50.
Needless to say I won't sell anything to him anymore and I make sure that if I am selling anything that he has I undercut him.
This was 2 months ago and he still hasn't sold it so I'm glad he's tied $30 of his money up for that long and still hasn't sold it.
As for completeness and condition my preference is to collect as the games were "meant" to be kept.
for NES, SNES, N64, etc. or any system that came in a cardboard box, I go for cart and manual only as I have no interested in trying to look after the condition of cardboard. I honestly think that the packaging was made cheap and was meant to be thrown out. I'll buy CIB if I come across it as I have a friend who collects CIB so I usually just give him the boxes.
For PS1, PS2, Gamecube, and current gen, etc. I only want complete with a case and manual. I also go for the original release i.e. not Greatest Hits or Player's Choice.
AO007:
Only problem I have with your post is that you willingly sold SNES copies of the Donkey Kong Country games. >:/
Kinda odd how DKC3 is usually the most expensive, seeing as it's the one people like the least. I guess it coming out after the Nintendo 64 impacted it a bit(It still managed to become a Player's Choice, much like the previous entries)

for last gen. and current gen. thats what i go for too, although im not bothered about original/greatest hits/players choice etc. i just make up a new cover,
anything else, for me, as long as it works, im fine with that too, ive been playing games for a long time now and the only time i even look at the manual is if im board!
(right, time to give wiggy nightmares over in the "random gaming photos" thread!)
