I am sitting here looking at (13) Game consoles and (500+) games....  I ask myself why the hell I still have to have a NES?  The answer is for TMNT II, TMNT III, Mario is Missing, Mario's Time Machine, Duck Tales 1 &2, Chip N' Dale 1&2, ect.  The same question I pose to my other consoles and get similar answers. 

My question to you guys is if the games we cannot live without from the 80s and 90s were ALL re-released on modern consoles in collections or downloads, for example all the TMNT games from the 8 and 16-bit era on a disc, would you disconnect your old consoles and save a ton of room by having maybe 3 consoles max with fewer game discs and no cartridges? 

I'm sure with licensing issues this will never happen sadly

For me, nothing beats putting in the cart and playing with the original hardware. If i did not have them, I would just play everything on emulates. My PC is hooked up to my TV and I have a hacked Wii, so they would be the same experiences than a Wii Virtual Console download. It's the same reason I listen to vinyl. Digital music is easier, and clearer than most used albums, but taking it out of the sleeve and putting it on the turn table is part of the experience. Also getting a bunch of cheep Carts or LPs and finding something unknown but good. Plus I tend to play the game longer on It's original hardware. I don't know why, probably because you did all the work to get it to run, might as well play it for longer.

Ya I know what you mean about the "feeling" ...  But a massive collection of games is a real burden...  and all the consoles and the cords....  It is just too much.  I will keep my stuff, but if I could have it all on 1 or 2 systems I would go that route to save a ton of space!

Most of my consoles remain disconnected when I'm not using them, so no, that wouldn't interest me very much.  I HATE paying for games over and over.  It's just stupid.  If I bought it once in 1989, then I don't see a need to purchase it again in 2012.  I've purchased ALTTP 3 times now.  Once for the SNES, for the GBA, and then on the VC.  I don't know why I even purchased it for the Wii other than the excitement of playing it on a new console (which faded REALLY quickly).  Paying for it again as DLC make the least sense to me since, when purchasing a game, you're actually only purchasing a license.  If I purchased that license in the 90's, then why do I have to purchase it again just to play it on another console? 

I can take a book to another room, city, or state and read it.  Hell, I can even scan it and read it on my computer if I were so inclined (and crazy).  I feel that I should be able to (legally) use my license for a game that I already purchased on another system. 

I know what you're gonna say, "DLC games often add features and whatnot which could easily be marketed as a new or at least revised/updated game, thus warranting re-purchase".  My only issue is that VC games offer NOTHING new over the original experience.  ALTTP is exactly the same thing on the VC as it was on the SNES, unlike the GBA version which has actually been worked over a great deal in order to fit the format PLUS the new features.  I don't feel bad about my GBA purchase, but I am sorta peeved that I paid for Zelda on the Wii again for no good reason.

i voted no, for these reasons

plus, i think you play longer simply because its more of a hassle to swap out a cart/disc than it is to click a mouse button...

I could just as easily emu all the NES games I have now but instead when I want to play a game I grab the cart off the shelf and play it on the original grey box.  So no, it wouldn't really affect me much.  What I would like is a (working) 3-in-1 console that would play NES, SNES, and N64 carts flawlessly so I could just have everything routed through one console, but it's not a big deal to me there.  As for collecting actual carts, just having them around me is half the fun of it all.  Sometimes I'll just sit there and stare at them all, and staring at a USB flash drive with every NES game on it wouldn't be nearly as entertaining. :p

I actually sold my Genesis and all the games when Sonic Mega Collection for the GCN came out. I hate 12 year old me now.

A lot of it comes down to using the original controller. As much as I like Sonic Generations, it's not the same playing Sonic without that thee button brick Genesis controller.

I would still have all my old consoles plugged in for the fact of my buying and selling stuff, and that I love to play all my old games.

Plus if your just wanting to save room there is these things called roms and emulators. (not that I'm suggesting it)

Exactly!  But sega could easily make a wireless replica of their controllers for use on the Wii U...  Nintendo could also make a lightweight N64 wireless controller.  If they could recapture the feeling, I would be sold.

You guys already know why I'm selling off my collection, but I fully intend to rebuild it in the future. 

I share the same sentiments as some of you, in that once I buy a game, I don't want to have to keep re-purchasing it every time it is re-released,
and I greatly prefer it to be on a long-lasting physical media, that is NOT tied to a console's serial number,
or dependent on an internet connection to get an OK from a server with an unknown lifespan.
I'll site the discontinuation of Xbox 1 Online Services last year, as an example.

There are much better ways to go about mitigating losses from used game sales, as well as preventing piracy, and encouraging...
Hmm. I better stop expounding on this now. It's too soon.

I dont think I could have said this better. I totally agree. I think the only one that I redownloaded and actually dont regret it was sonic cd on my ps3.

Well if I had any older consoles... (I don't really consider the PS2, the oldest system I have, very old...)
I probably wouldn't pack them away
Like almost everyone else is saying here... The experience of using the old console and cartridge etc etc
I still wouldn't mind if they did it with the rarer games though, (like Earthbound) since I know how slim a chance it would be for me to actually play the original ><
(although I've heard that Earthbound is actually just in high demand... but either way, it's too much money T^T)
Yeah there are ROMS.... but... I dunno, I like playing games on consoles rather than my computer >-<
