I really feel like we're in a "boom bubble" right now. I don't think it'll crash like the housing market or anything, but I really do feel that a lot of the games for the pre-2000 generations of systems will come down in the next couple of years. Not bottom out or anything, but just roll back a bit to what some of us think of as more reasonable/realistic prices.

Game collecting is a really young hobby, and we're going through a growth spurt. It can't balloon forever. Nothing ever does. There will always be the extremely rare and valuable items, but I can help but think that a lot of the 50-100 dollar titles will come down.

Well the digital space has gotten a bit better, in that games that were insanely expensive in physical form, are finally getting digital re-releases.

Tomba! on the PS1 on average demands $60 for a disc only copy, but it was re-released on PSN June 19th, so the prices should go down to something more reasonable, like say $30.

Meanwhile, Shantae is rumored to be getting a VC re-release on 3DS, which should hopefully put down those insane three-figure prices.

(Also, while not the same, Pikmin 2 recently got a Wii re-release, so that should go down some as well)

wiggy:

I think that re-releases will eventually have far less affect on the price of originals (like so many other collectibles). Heck, you can already see the lessened difference with re-releases in the last few years versus just 5 or so years ago.

I remember when the pre-FF7 titles were released on the PS1. The SNES titles dropped to less than retail damn near instantly. But, the re-releases were sorta lackluster and somewhat busted. Prices for the originals climbed back up and have been pretty steady. I think more and more collectors are adopting a mentality more like many of us, which is to say that having original copies has become far more desirable than it ever has been in the past.

Forte, sorry, not trying to totally derail your thread.  To help keep it on track I wanna add a +1 to Forte's seller score. I'm entirely satisfied with my transaction ;D ;)

Well it's not perfect. Most of the time the price is reduced quite a bit, but I have seen a few isolated cases where the re-release either didn't affect the price, or actually INCREASED it due to demand for the original, obviously.

Again, though, in most cases the price decreases.
