I haven't checked your covers, so I can't comment on the actual things tik pointed out, but I would like to say that comparing them to 2 random covers on the site is never going to be the way to go. Over the years our quality standards have got stricter and stricter - this isn't to be awkward, and I know how it can make new artists to the site frustrated. These days anything less than perfect won't be accepted. Unfortunately we can't remove the old sub par covers from the site, which is why checking a lot of existing covers will just cause you more frustration. With respect, although spiden and banisher are happy with the covers (and lots of other people too I am sure) they aren't admins here, so don't have the trained eye to spot what it is we are looking for. The fact tik took time to give you the feedback should give you some confidence that he thinks with a little work, they could be soon up to the required standard, as shit covers are usually just deleted without feedback. I assume you are using Photoshop, so For dust and scratches, practice using the clone stamp tool, and the band aid. (Band aid only for very small spots). If you are making scans yourself, make sure to clean the scan bed before you start, and if a glossy cover, a quick wipe with a lint free cloth can make a big difference. |

Actually your Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel cover had a few problems that I had to fix. The black "flooded" areas that it shouldn't have. Like the bottom of the nunchucks on the backside, and the bad guys ear on the basckside as well. Here is a version of the cover I fixed myself : http://www.mediafire.com/view/cxtrhm3vn4vnklh/Zero%20the%20Kamikaze%20Squirrel.png# Don't be discourged though. I have to fix and alter most covers before I print them, even the covers hosted on this site. For instance, I am planning on making a brand new cover for Contra III because the one hosted on this site is of very poor quality. Continue making covers, you do good work. Just know if you submit a cover, it's going to be an ordeal. |

Thanks guys, really appreciate you adding your thoughts into the mix here............as I said, hopefully I did not come across in that post like I was throwing a hissy fit or pissed off in any way, just wanting to know more about what to do to get them better. Sheep - Thanks for clarifying all that you did there, I was not aware of the previously lower standards so that clears all that "comparison" stuff up........Tik, feel free to ignore that point and question of mine! lol. I guess as I am SO new here, there is obviously a lot I do not know, and although I had read a guide in one of the other sub forums about what is expected, I just assumed that if guys like Banisher and Spiden think you are doing a good job and want you to carry on, then the covers are effectively ready and up to the standard of the site in general. But I get the difference now, its one thing making covers for collectors in the forums who want them but its another having the general site providing perhaps sub-par covers to the myriad of people who would never come near the forums to look for covers.........so we are talking about the reputation of the site as a whole here, and I get that completely in terms of not allowing my current covers to go "live" if they are not up to scratch. And yes, its is Photoshop I use although I would never profess to be any where near a pro or even a widely experienced Photoshopper, its really only been the last year I have gotten more confident and able with it........evidenced by my never having used the 2 tools you suggested there! so I will start playing with them to see if they can help me improve, thanks! Spiden - Thank you man for pointing those specific issue out.......I obviously see them now, although I can honesty say that I missed that whilst I was doing it as I would not have deemed it "finished" if I had, especially as it would have been such an easy fix.........so sorry you had to sort that. But is that it?.......you didnt have issue with the back screen shots? or the generally untouched from scan nature of the front? or are we talking about the difference between you as a collector on the forums, and the admin guys with their much more intense scrutiny as Sheep pointed out is the case? lol. Can you do me a favour and look at the Mighty Max and also James Bond Jr in particular please? as Mighty Max especially I think is by far my best and I just scanned over James Bond and cannot see anything really wrong with that........just so I can see the kinds of standards we are talking about here, as if I have kind of or almost reached it with those, then I know where I need to set my baseline you know. Thanks again guys.............next one is gonna blow your balls off!!! ;D |

Just had a quick look at mighty max (only on my iPad so couldn't scrutinize properly), and while you have done a great job for the most part - it looks like you've been using the fill tool on the front. Fill tool generally leaves unsightly jagged edges, and doesn't cope at all well with blended areas, which are quite evident in the blues on your cover. Much better to use the clone stamp if possible, and perhaps surface blur filter on selected areas to even out colors, rather than fill. All the artists have their own little tricks to get things looking smoother. If you haven't already checked it out, have a look at segamer's Photoshop for noobs thread. Some great tips in there. Edit: looking at it in more detail, you have done a fantastic job with it considering you've only used the basic tools. I can't wait to see what you can do once you get more photoshop proficient. |

Gotcha Sheep!.......the limitations of filling in colours that way has always bugged me, hence why I shy away from textured images, as obviously not much I can do there with the heavy handed paint bucket! lol. Feel damage I literally just copy the nearest colour and then use a small paint brush to fill it in, then maybe a little smudge tool to soften it but that usually makes it look worse. Man, I am already using the clone stamp right now and..............its a REVELATION!!!!!! lol, I god damned LOVE IT! and am now annoyed as hell that I considered it too advanced for me. I have chosen the aptly titled "Home Improvement" for my new and improved, knock you out of your socks, no need for Spiden improvements, satisfy the eagle eyes of cover admins, badass new cover!!! In the immortal words of Tim Allen from the show this game is licensed (yes, THAT "Home Improvement"! lol).........."Urrrrrrrah!". ;D |
