64 is a lot harder to design for than the SNES isn't it? Such a lack of decent artwork to use. I notice these are much more retail than your SNES collection, more passion for the 16bit console?

Well, sometimes.  The real reason that these are almost all retail is that I started with my N64 games when I got to this site.   I had just done a BUNCH of custom covers for some of my Saturn and PS1 games, and the idea of making covers with almost zero effort was really appealing at the time (I still love picking up N64 games.  Takes like 20 minutes per cover ;D ).  but then I stumbled onto a few that had really crummy scans.  Namely, Mario Golf and Transformers.  So I had to make customs for them, even though they're still in the retail format.

DEFINITELY more passion for the 16-bit era.  I'm an old fart (for a gamer), which means that I grew up with the 8 and 16-bit stuff, which of course means that they hold the most nostalgia for me.  I only actually play a handful of them with any regularity, but I still have LOTS of love for 'em and most have seem plenty of play time over the years ;)   I probably play N64 games more often though.  As much as people groaned about lack of solid titles for the N64, I can't really think of another game library who's great to crappy title ratio is higher.

There were like 220ish N64 games, right?  There are at least 75 games worth owning IMO.  That means that more than a third of the library is made up of decent titles.   Jeeze, I got off topic...

Damnit Wiggy! I just finish my 50+ N64 collection with retail covers because I didn't like the look of the verticals. Now I see these and I just have to make all of my games with these. I also didn't like that your Gameshark and Memory Card covers looked so different from the others so I made these:

I know they are not perfect but I am new to Photoshop and still figuring out how to use it. The border around it is just to help me cut it to the right size since the outside is black. What do you think: good, bad, ugly?

I actually print all of mine with a gray border as well, just didn't up them that way because I thought it would put people off.  It definitely helps a lot more than crop marks which require that you not cut through the entire sheet at once.

I think they work (the revisions), but they could use a little love IMO.  The spine on the controller pack, specifically the title, is really tiny.  I'd punch that WAY up and possibly even use 2 rows if need be.

The art on the GS cover is creeping down into the template itself as well and it looks like the art for the controller pack got stretched a bit too much.

Also, this reminds me that I've got like 10-15 new covers that I've got to upload.  Ugh, so much to do, SO much to do.

I know, like I said I'm new to Photoshop and they looked pretty good on my screen at 25% but when I printed them I knew I would have to redo them but I decided to move on to other covers first. I appreciate the work that you did to get me started though because they would be absolutely awful if I tried to come up with a template on my own.

Do you have the original art for those two covers?  If you post it, I can take care of those issues in no time flat and I can show you what I will do to tidy them up so you can do so in the future.  There are all kinds of simple, SIMPLE techniques that nearly everyone should be able to master in order to make some really decent, professional looking covers ;)

Here you go.

The back artwork fits pretty well, but there's this little awkward bit at the bottom.  No prob, we can fix that in about 5 minutes, tops.

Select > Copy > Paste this chunk of the cover.

At the top menu:

Edit > Free Transform or Rotate.  Then just move it into position.  For the other corner, just hit "paste" again, then go to Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal.  Now just move it to the other corner as in the pic.

Now we need a bar across the bottom to finish the border.  Same as before.  Select the chunk that you want, blah blah blah.

Bam!  They're all in place.  Now just carefully erase the extra bits that are covering up the type and whatnot and you're good to go!

GameShark Double UGC

The controller pack takes a bit more work, but is still WAY doable with the right tools.

Paste the back cover into the file and (gasp!) upscale it so that it fits like so.

Normally I don't recommend scaling anything up, but it gets the job done in this instance, plus that scan isn't all that great in the 1st place, so whatever.

Select > Copy > Paste the N64 logo at the top and scoot it over.

Ever use the Stamp/Clone tool?  It's about the greatest thing EVAR!  Hold down Alt, left click and area, then let go of alt and press and hold left click to paint a clone of the area that you just clicked before.  Play with it for a bit, it's really, REALLY useful.

This is how we'll clean up the crap in the corner that got cut off by our scaling.  Losing it is actually good, since it's redundant.  My template already contains the legal jargon and whatnot.

Select > Copy > Paste this little icon from the upper right.

Gonna need to move that warning box to make room.  Select/Copy/Paste or the Stamp tool can get the job done.

Then push the icon bar over and Edit > Transform > Scale.  Drag it to a size that works and nudge into its new home.

Use the Lasso tool (looks like a little lasso.  Right click to select the Polygonal Lasso which looks like a pointy lasso).  Select the area(s) that you need to use the stamp tool in order to remove the image of the Controller Pack in the background.

Go back and use the Stamp again to remove the icon from its original location and you're pretty much done!

Controller Pack

I didn't cover the spine type because I'm fairly certain that you can sort that one out.  Just make the type bigger LOL!

Hope this helps.

Wow! Thank you sir, that was much more helpful than trying to find stuff on Google or YouTube. I don't know how I ever lived without Photoshop all these years, it's amazing.
